The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is a 2007 Western drama film adapted from Ron Hansen's 1983 novel of the same name. The film is directed by Andrew Dominik, with Brad Pitt portraying Jesse James and Casey Affleck as Robert Ford. Filming took place in Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg. Initially intended for a 2006 release, the film was postponed and re-edited for a September 21, 2007 release. While the film contains representations of historical figures, it notably dramatizes the relationship between James and Ford.

Introduction, train robbery (September 5 1881)
The beginning of the film features the narrator giving a detailed speech introducing many facts and legends about the American Old West outlaw, Jesse James (Brad Pitt). This film tries to debunk as many of the myths commonly attributed to James as possible, and focuses its attention on the flaws of celebrity worship and the tendency for facts to be distorted in the 19th century. Aside from Jesse, the film also tells the story of Robert Ford (Casey Affleck), a seemingly insecure young man who has grown up idolizing Jesse James and is often seen as a coward by those around him.[citation needed] Bob seeks out his hero in the middle of a forest in Blue Cut, Missouri where the James gang is staging a train robbery. Bob makes petty attempts to join the gang with the help of his brother Charley Ford (Sam Rockwell), who has been a recruit for a while now. Jesse allows Bob to take part in the train robbery to try to prove himself, but Jesse's brother Frank James (Sam Shepard) disagrees, saying that Bob hasn't the ingredients to become a member in their gang. The robbery is a success, but ends up being the last robbery committed by the James brothers. Afterward, Frank decides to retire from crime and settle east in Baltimore, leaving his brother to lead the gang by himself. Jesse does not mind Bob's presence at first, and begins to have Bob tag along wherever he goes. Gradually, Bob forms a complex love/hate relationship with Jesse, still admiring him to the point of obsession, but also becoming resentful and somewhat fearful due to Jesse's bullying nature. Jesse begins to acknowledge Bob's awkwardness and unusual fanaticism, and sends him away as a result.

Feud between Dick and Wood, Kentucky (September — October, 1881)
The gang members have gone their separate ways after their last train robbery. From this point on, Bob still wants to get involved in the gang as he starts to familiarize himself with the other recruits, who often stay at the farmhouse of Martha Bolton (Alison Elliott), the elder sister of the Ford siblings. Jesse's cousin Wood Hite (Jeremy Renner) also stays there, and often uses Jesse's status to justify his bossiness towards Bob, which Bob takes a great disliking to. Wood apparently has a love interest in Martha, but Dick Liddil (Paul Schneider) frequently gets in his way. Dick, who is perhaps the most highly educated member in the gang, has a reputation for being a womanizer. During Dick and Wood's stay in the latter's home in Kentucky, Dick creates a grudge against Wood by having an affair with his stepmother Sarah Hite (Kailin See). When Wood finds out, he forces Dick into a gunfight. Both fail to kill each other, and Dick is ordered to leave at once, so he returns to his home in Kansas City. The shootout is not shown, but later told by Wood.


[edit] Conspiracy (November — December, 1881)

In exchange for a partnership, Dick reveals to Bob that he is in cahoots with Jim Cummins, an elusive gang member conspiring to capture Jesse for a bounty. Jim Cummins' character is never actually seen onscreen, but he is referenced multiple times throughout the film. Jesse likes to take to calling in on his old gang, stopping by their homes from one to another, so he decides to pay a visit to Ed Miller (Garret Dillahunt), another former gang member who is seen as thick-headed, shy, and very poor with words. Ed unwittingly gives away information on Cummins' plot. Thus, Jesse lures Ed deep into the woods and kills him, before going on a hunt for Jim. Jesse stops by Kansas City to bring Dick along for the hunt, and the two head to Bill Ford's farm, where Jim usually stays. Bill is married to Jim's sister, and is Bob and Charley's paternal uncle. At the farm, Dick and Jesse are greeted by Albert Ford, Bill's 14-year-old son. Although Albert does not know where Jim is staying, Jesse brings the child to a barn nearby and violently beats him, further revealing his troubled and destructive mind-state. Dick stops Jesse in an attempt to prevent further harm to the boy. Confused about his actions, Jesse weeps, and rides away on his horse to regather himself. Dick decides to travel back to Martha's farm, and in doing so conveniently apologizes to the Fords for Jesse.


The Shootout, Dinner Scene (January 1882)

Wood returns from Kentucky to the Bolton farmhouse in a wintery morning. While Dick is still asleep upstairs with Bob and Charley, Wood retells his shooting scrape with Dick to Martha and Wilbur (another Ford brother) in the kitchen. When Wood discovers Dick is upstairs, he rushes up the staircase to the closed bedroom door, and the now-awakened Bob and Dick prepare themselves for the imminent gun battle. After a brief moment of silence, Wood kicks the door open, and the shooting begins. Charley jumps out of a window to dodge the gunfire, spraining his ankle, and Robert cowers in his bed. After a few misses, Wood fires a shot through Dick's thigh, and Dick returns with a shot hitting Wood in his right forearm, knocking his pistol away. Dick, immobilized on the floor by his leg wound, raises his Navy Colt to finish off Wood, only to discover he's out of bullets. Wood calmly picks up his pistol and takes careful aim at Dick's forehead. It is then that Bob fires a bullet through Wood's skull, mortally wounding him before he can pull the trigger and kill Dick. The Fords dump Wood's body in the woods nearby and hatch a plan to conceal this event from Jesse.

Jesse then re-emerges one night to pay a visit to the Fords. During dinner, Jesse notices Bob's anxiety and forces Bob to tell a story. Bob then reluctantly recites a long list of similarities he has with Jesse. Jesse is somewhat disturbed by this, and in return tells a story about a man he once killed for betraying him, explaining how Bob slightly reminds him of that man. Bob, now humiliated, throws a fit and miserably leaves the room, while Jesse and Charley plan a trip to St. Joseph, Missouri. At his home in St. Joseph, Jesse learns of Wood's disappearance.


Talking to the authorities (February — March 1882)

Bob's respect for Jesse begins to diminish as he realizes the nickel books about Jesse he had read during his childhood have little resemblance to the Jesse he now knows. Consequently, Bob talks with Kansas City police commissioner Henry Craig (Michael Parks), saying that he has information regarding Jesse James' whereabouts. To prove his allegiance with the James Gang, Bob urges Craig to arrest Dick Liddil, who has been staying at the Bolton farmhouse while his leg healed. Days after Dick's arrest, Bob attends a party held by the Governor of Missouri, Thomas T. Crittenden (James Carville), celebrating Henry Craig's efforts to finally rid Jackson County of the James Gang. To Bob's surprise, Dick Liddil has been released from jail and is now meeting with the governor. It is revealed that authorities aren't particularly interested in prosecuting Liddil; they're really after Jesse James. To save himself, Liddil has disclosed information about the James Gang's robberies in his confession. Afterward, Bob is brought into a meeting with the governor, and subsequently strikes up a deal with him. Bob is given ten days to capture or assassinate Jesse James for a bounty of $10,000, and is given further instructions by Craig's partner Sheriff James Timberlake (Ted Levine). Meanwhile, on the way back from St. Joseph, a weary Jesse talks to Charley about suicide. Charley then convinces Jesse to take Bob under his wing.


[edit] Impending doom (March 25 — April 2, 1882)

By now, Robert and Charley Ford are the only active members in the gang other than Jesse. He keeps a close eye on the brothers, prohibiting them from going anywhere without him. The brothers move in with Jesse to his home in St. Joseph, where they stay with Jesse's wife Zee (Mary-Louise Parker) and their two children. One night in the living room, Jesse invites the Fords to take part in the robbery of the Platte City bank. He re-enacts the way he'll cut the cashier's throat, and demonstrates this by holding a knife to Bob's neck. Jesse then gives a violent monologue about the way he'll execute the cashier and pulls away leaving Bob shaken and visibly in tears. Even though Jesse treats this jokingly at first, laughing in hysterics, he stops his laughter abruptly to embarrass Bob even further. Jesse walks out of the room while the Fords look at each other in concern, overwhelmed with the fear of being killed by him. It has become evident that Jesse has succumbed to derangement— his behavior becoming more erratic and unpredictable with every passing day. From time to time, Jesse even "prophesizes" Bob's betrayal. Jesse is never out of reach from his guns, and has proven this on more than one occasion. Even when he appears to be asleep, he can awaken at the slightest sounds. Given these circumstances, Bob decides killing him would be the safest solution. But even as Jesse appears inhuman in the way he acts, he explains to Bob about how problematic his behavior has become for him, and that he often feels helpless and at times suicidal. As a way to apologize for his actions, Jesse gives Bob a brand new pistol on April Fools' Day.


The assassination (April 3, 1882)

On the day of the assassination, both Ford brothers wrestle with their task, especially Charley, who has long considered Jesse as one of his closest friends. That morning, Jesse goes out to retrieve the latest newspaper, and on his way to the kitchen for breakfast he throws the paper onto the sitting-room couch. Robert walks past and sees the headline: The Arrest and Confession of Dick Liddel. Terrified, Bob slips the front section of the newspaper under a blanket, then straps on his gun holster before sitting down in the kitchen for breakfast. Immediately, Jesse walks back to the sitting-room and discovers the hidden section of the newspaper. He sits back down again to stir his coffee while he reads, learning of Dick's confession. Jesse glares at the Ford brothers, growing increasingly suspicious of them for never reporting this matter to him. Bob excuses himself and retreats to the sitting-room rocking chair, panic-stricken. Charley follows him, putting on his holster. Jesse walks in to see if the two are ready for the trip to Platte City. The Fords prepare for the worst, but it appears Jesse is withholding his wrath due to the presence of his wife and children. Instead of scolding the Fords, he walks over to the window and gazes outside, withdrawn and hollow. He watches his young daughter sing peacefully in the distance. The morning wind howls faintly in the background, and all is calm, and the Fords quietly observe Jesse— who is in utter bliss, if only for once in his long, exhausting life. After some silent contemplation, seemingly knowing his time has come and accepting it, Jesse takes off his gun belt and lays it on the couch, as a final gesture to the boys, as he appears to surrender in the form of an indirect suicide. For the first time in his life, Bob sees Jesse gunless, and he watches in surprise while Jesse turns around and stares at the portrait of a horse above the mantle. As if assembling his perfect death, Jesse carefully sets up a chair under the portrait and climbs on top of it with a feather duster in one hand, making himself even more vulnerable and helpless. The Fords position themselves, blocking all doorways, and the two signal each other with glances while Charley slowly raises his gun. From the reflection of the picture, Jesse watches Bob as he takes this opportunity to draw his pistol, and the outlaw looks down in affirmation. Bob fires a bullet into his head, killing him instantly, and Jesse shakes the house as he plummets to the floor. Zee rushes to the living room, dismayed to find her husband bloodied and lifeless. When she tearfully questions Bob, he immediately denies doing or knowing anything before Charley pulls him out of the house, declaring it an "accident". The Fords run down to the telegraph office in order to wire the governor about the news. A brief montage then follows, describing what is to happen to the body of Jesse James.


Aftermath, Creede (1883 — 1892)

After the assassination, Robert Ford becomes a celebrity and ends up in a theater show in Manhattan, re-enacting the assassination night after night with his brother playing Jesse James. It seems, even to Charley, that Bob shows no remorse for killing Jesse. Bob would always show pride in what he has done, denying all allegations of cowardice. In contrast, Charley becomes tormented by the assassination, questioning why he did what he did. His cheerfulness that so well identified his humanity is not noticeable in his voice anymore, and his stage performance only reminds him of the man they've shamefully betrayed. Overwhelmed with despair, he tries writing letters to Zee James, asking for forgiveness, but would never actually send them in fear of causing more pain to the grieving widow. Ailing from tuberculosis, Charley eventually kills himself in his apartment.

After Charley's suicide, something begins to strike Bob. Instead of Jesse being remembered as a criminal and a murderer, he is now idealized as a Robin Hood-like hero. Ford on the other hand is openly shunned by the public and is branded a cowardly traitor. At times of anger, Bob dreams of visiting the families of Jesse James' victims, hoping to remind himself that what he did was not in vain, but for the benefit of the people. In a constant struggle to liberate himself from his ever-growing guilt, Bob gives in to alcoholism by frequenting local taverns, only to make a fool of himself.

Ten years have passed since Jesse's assassination. Bob, as unlikely as it may seem, has prospered over the past decade, and now acquires a steady income working as a saloonkeeper in the small mining town of Creede, Colorado, still uncertain on what fate awaits him. He becomes romantically involved with a beautiful woman named Dorothy Evans (Zooey Deschanel), who would have long conversations with Bob in hopes of providing comfort to him. In the closing moments of the film, Bob is sought out and murdered by a man named Edward O'Kelley, who has developed a strong hatred towards Bob over the years. At the same time, the narrator gives an epilogue to end the film, recounting that O'Kelley would later be pardoned, and that in contrast to Jesse James, Robert Ford would achieve no fame after his death.

Once is a 2007 Irish musical film written and directed by John Carney. Set in Dublin, this naturalistic drama stars musicians Glen Hansard (of popular Irish rock band The Frames) and Markéta Irglová as struggling musicians. Collaborators prior to making the film, Hansard and Irglová composed and performed all of the original songs in the movie.

Shot for only €130,000 ($160,000),[1] the film was very successful,[2] earning substantial per-screen box office averages in the United States.[3] It received extremely enthusiastic reviews[4][5] and awards such as the 2007 Independent Spirit Award for best foreign film. Hansard and Irglová's song "Falling Slowly" received a 2007 Academy Award for Best Original Song and the soundtrack as a whole also received a Grammy nomination.

An unnamed, thirty-something Dublin busker (listed in the credits as "Guy," played by Glen Hansard) sings and plays guitar on Grafton Street, a Dublin shopping district, struggling with the trials of performing on the street, including chasing after a heroin addict (Darren Healy) who attempts to steal his earnings. Lured by his music, an unnamed young Czech immigrant flower seller (listed in the credits as "Girl," played by Markéta Irglová) approaches him impertinently during one of his late night street performances and, despite his annoyance, persists in questioning him about his songs. Upon learning that he also repairs vacuum cleaners in his father's shop, she insists that he fix her broken vacuum.

The next day she brings her Hoover by and parlays it into lunch together, whereupon she piques his interest by telling him that she is a musician, too. He asks to hear her play, so they visit a music store where she regularly plays piano. After teaching her one of his songs ("Falling Slowly"), which she quickly learns to play, they sing and play the song together, kindling a musical and potentially romantic connection. He invites her and her ailing vacuum back to his father's shop, and on the bus home musically answers her question as to what his songs are about: a long-time girlfriend who cheated on him, then left ("Broken Hearted Hoover Fixer Sucker Guy").

At the shop, he repairs her vacuum and she meets his father (Bill Hodnett), who seems indifferent to his son's musical talent. The Guy takes the Girl up to his room, but when he asks her to stay the night, she is insulted and leaves. The next day, he apologizes and they quickly patch things up, as over the course of a week they excitedly write, rehearse and record songs, and get to know each other. Songs continue to be performed in a real-world, diegetic fashion, often in their entirety, as when the Girl rehearses her lyrics for one of the Guy's songs (which she entitles "If You Want Me"), singing to herself while walking down the street, or when at a party, people perform impromptu (including "Gold," performed by a trio featuring guitarist Hansard singing harmony).

Their flirtation continues, but at the same time, he is thinking about and writing about ("Lies") his ex-girlfriend (Marcella Plunkett), who moved to London. The Girl encourages him to move there, win his girlfriend back and pursue his musical career. Invited home to dinner by the Girl, the Guy discovers that she has a toddler (Kate Haugh) and lives with her mother (Danuse Ktrestova). He soon decides that it is time to move to London, but he wants to make a high-quality demo of his songs to take with him and asks the Girl to record it with him. She takes the lead as they secure a bank loan—from a bank where the loan officer (Sean Miller) is a musical hobbyist—and reserve time at a professional studio.

On a romantic motorbike jaunt, she reveals, much to his consternation, that she is married, though her estranged husband is back in the Czech Republic. When Guy asks if she still loves her husband, she answers in Czech, "Miluju tebe"[6], but coyly declines to translate what she said. After recruiting a trio of musicians (Gerard Hendrick, Alaistair Foley, Hugh Walsh), they rehearse, then go into the studio to record. Their lack of experience shows, but they quickly impress the jaded studio engineer Eamon (Geoff Minogue) once they begin recording their first song ("When Your Mind's Made Up"). On a break in the wee hours of the morning, the Girl finds a piano in an empty studio and finally plays the Guy one of her own compositions ("The Hill"), though she breaks down before finishing the song, which tells of romantic frustration. He responds by asking her to come with him to London, but is not prepared for the reality of her mother coming along to help with the baby.

Still, he is smitten. After the all-night session wraps up successfully, they walk home. Before they part ways, the Girl reveals that she spoke to her husband and he is coming to live with her in Dublin. The Guy asks her to spend his last night in Dublin with him; she says that it would only result in "hanky-panky," which is a "bad idea", but after the Guy's pestering she ultimately agrees to come over. In the end, she stands him up and he cannot find her to say goodbye before his flight. He plays the demo for his father, who, moved and impressed, gives him money to help him get settled in London. Before leaving for the airport, the Guy buys the Girl a piano and makes arrangements for its delivery, then calls his ex-girlfriend, who is happy about his imminent arrival. The Girl's husband (Senan Haugh) moves to Dublin and they reunite. But the final shots convey how the Girl and the Guy were deeply affected by their short time together.

Neither of the two leads is a trained or experienced actor; Hansard and Irglová are both professional musicians.[7] Director Carney, former bassist for Hansard's band The Frames, had asked his long-time friend to share busker anecdotes and compose songs for the film, but had intended the male lead to be played by actor Cillian Murphy,[8] who was an almost-signed rock musician before turning to acting.[9] Murphy was also going to be one of the film's producers. But Murphy balked at acting opposite non-actor Irglová (then 17 years old) and at singing Hansard's octave-leaping songs, so he pulled out, as did the film's other producers along with their financial resources.[10] Carney then turned to songwriter Hansard, who'd previously done only one acting job, a supporting role as guitarist Outspan Foster in the 1991 ensemble film The Commitments, the story of a Dublin soul music cover band. Hansard was initially reluctant, fearing that he wouldn't be able to pull it off, but after stipulating that he had to be fully involved in the filmmaking process and that it be low-budget and intimate, he agreed.[10]

Produced with a shoestring budget, about 75% of the budget was funded by Bord Scannán na hÉireann (The Irish Film Board), plus some of Carney's own money. The director gave his salary to the two stars, and promised a share of the back-end for everyone if the film was a success. Shot with a skeleton crew on a 17-day shoot, the filmmakers saved money by using natural light and shooting at friends' houses.[1] The musical party scene was filmed in Hansard's own flat, with his personal friends playing the partygoers/musicians[11]—his mother, Catherine Hansard, is briefly featured singing solo. The Dublin street scenes were done without permits and with a long lens so that many passersby didn't even realize that a film was being made. The long lens also helped the non-professional actors relax and forget about the camera, and some of the dialogue ended up being improvised.[10]

During the shoot, Carney had predicted a romance, calling Hansard and Irglová his Bogart and Bacall. Hansard and Irglová did become a couple in real life, getting together while on a promotional tour across North America, and they now live together in Dublin, in Hansard's flat.[12] Entertainment Weekly reported,

“ The chemistry between (the) two leads ... was easy to produce during the January 2006 shoot in Dublin. "I had been falling in love with her for a long time, but I kept telling myself she's just a kid," says Hansard, 37, who has known his 19-year-old costar for the past six years. (The two are now dating.) "There was definitely the feeling we were documenting something precious and private."[3] ”

Yet Hansard and Irglová were quite happy with the unrequited ending for their onscreen characters. In an interview, Hansard states that "Had Fox Searchlight Pictures changed it, had they changed the end and made us kiss, I wouldn't be interested in coming and promoting it, at all."[11] Hansard says that ad-libbing produced the moment where Irglova's character tells the Guy in unsubtitled Czech, "I love you," but when it was shot, he didn't know what she'd said, just like his character.[13]

Both Hansard and Irglova give the impression in interviews that they are unlikely to pursue further acting. Irglova has spoken about being nervous in front of a crew, saying "I don't think I would be a good actress, overall",[14] and Hansard generally refers to the movie as a one-off, talking of "moving on... living a different life".[14]

The soundtrack album was released on May 22, 2007 in the U.S. and on May 26 in Ireland.

A collector's edition of the soundtrack was released on December 4, 2007 with additional songs and a bonus DVD with live performances and interviews about the film. The additional songs were two previously unreleased Van Morrison covers: Hansard's "And the Healing Has Begun", and Hansard and Irglová's "Into the Mystic".[15]

Different versions of a few of the soundtrack's songs were previously released on The Frames' album The Cost and on Hansard and Irglová's The Swell Season (both released in 2006). An early version of the last track, "Say It to Me Now," originally appeared on The Frames' 1995 album Fitzcarraldo. "All the Way Down" first appeared on the self-titled album from musician collective The Cake Sale, with Gemma Hayes providing vocals. The song "Gold" was written by Irish singer-songwriter Fergus O'Farrell and performed by Interference.[16]

Plot
The main character, Bill, played by Leary, wakes up from a coma in a psychiatric hospital. He is suffering from delusions that he is about to be executed by a futuristic society which has unfrozen him from the past. However, under Hope Davis's care as Ann, his psychiatrist, he starts remembering trauma from his pre-coma life, including the death of his father, a break up with his fiance, and a drunken binge while driving. He begins to recover from his mental breakdown yet his delusions do not cease. As the truth unravels, the viewer comes to find out that his delusions may be closer to the truth than the reality he was told of by his care-givers.

The movie features a very quiet, bleak atmosphere. There are few characters, with the great majority of dialogue and on-screen time taken up by Denis Leary and Hope Davis. Leary's character is given an electric guitar as a means to pacify him. Several short cut-scenes feature Leary playing intricate and beautiful blues-style guitar solos.

Production
The most expensive Czech movie produced, the budget totalled €8 million. The train attack is the most expensive scene in Czech cinema history, costing more than the entire film Kolya. Dogfight footage from the 1969 film Battle of Britain was seamlessly integrated with contemporary film footage using computer imagery and mastering to create the aerial sequences. Brief shots from the 1990 film Memphis Belle were also used. The film's director Jan Svěrák, played a number of roles, including practically all the crew members of an allied B-25 Mitchell bomber in the escort of a damaged bomber scene.

I went to see The Clone Wars Saturday afternoon.

My daughter and I made a total of 8 people watching.
Going in I thought great; a big screen, animation, no holds barred... right?!!
The animation technology could have been up three more levels.
I could go on and on but I'm so disgusted... I need to put this behind me.
I was so looking forward to this. I'm totally disappointed!
It was more than a let down... more like being dropped on my head.

Plot
The film is about a mathematical genius, Maximillian Cohen, who narrates much of the movie. Max, a number theorist, theorizes that everything in nature can be understood through numbers, and that if you graph the numbers properly patterns will emerge. He is working on finding patterns within the stock market, using its billions upon billions of variables as his data set with the assistance of his homemade supercomputer, Euclid.

The film opens with Max narrating a time when he was very young and tried to stare directly at the sun, despite his mother's warnings not to. His eyes were terribly damaged, and his doctors were not sure if they would ever heal. They did, but immediately thereafter he began to be plagued with headaches. The headaches are severe enough to drive him to the brink of madness, and he often passes out from the pain. He also suffers from extreme paranoia, manifested in menacing hallucinations, and some form of social anxiety disorder. Throughout the film, it gets increasingly difficult to separate what is real and what is a product of Max's hallucinations.

In the course of his work, Max begins making stock predictions based on Euclid's calculations. In the middle of printing out the picks, Euclid suddenly crashes, but first spits out a 216-digit number that appears to be nothing more than a random string. Disgusted, Max tosses out the printout of the number. The next morning, Max checks the financial pages and sees that the few picks Euclid made before crashing were accurate. He searches desperately for the printout but cannot find it.

The only social interaction Max seems to have is with Sol Robeson, his old mathematics mentor, who had regarded Max as his prize student. Sol had been a leading figure in research into the nature of Pi in his earlier years, but gave it up for reasons that are not yet clear. He sympathizes with Max about the loss of Euclid but becomes unnerved when Max mentions the string of numbers, asking if the string was 216 digits long. When Max questions him about the string, Sol indicates that he came across such a number many years ago. He urges Max to slow down and try taking a break.

At a coffee shop, Max meets Lenny Meyer, a Hasidic Jew who does mathematical research on the Torah. Lenny demonstrates some simple Gematria to Max and explains how some people believe that the Torah is a string of numbers that form a code sent by God. Max takes an interest when he realizes that some of the number concepts Lenny discusses are similar to real mathematical theories, such as the Fibonacci Sequence. Lenny also mentions that he and his fellow researchers are searching for a 216-digit number that is repeated throughout the text of the Torah.

Max is also being pursued by agents of a Wall Street firm, who are interested in his work for financial reasons. One of the agents, Marcy Dawson, offers Max a powerful new computer chip in exchange for the results of his work. Max insists that he is uninterested in profit but takes the chip to help his new research into the Torah.

Utilizing the sophisticated chip, Max has Euclid analyze mathematical patterns in the Torah. Euclid crashes again, but once again spits out the 216-digit number. Thereafter, Max appears to become somewhat clairvoyant and able to visualize the stock-market patterns he had been searching for. His headaches also increase in intensity, and he discovers a strange vein-like bulge protruding from his right temple.

During a visit with Sol, his old mentor warns him that the mysterious 216-digit number is more than Max realizes, and seems to have powers of its own. Sol insists that trying to understand it years ago had caused him to suffer a stroke, but Max angrily dismisses Sol's concerns as cowardice.

Marcy Dawson and her henchmen grab Max on the street, threatening him with a gun. They had been using some of Max's formulas to try to make predictions of their own, but their limited understanding of the information has caused them to unwittingly crash the stock market. Lenny and his fellow Hasidim rescue Max, but soon make similar demands on Max to give them the number. They believe the number was meant for them to bring about the Messianic Age. Max refuses, insisting that whatever the source of the number, it has been revealed to him alone.

Driven to the brink of madness, Max experiences another headache and resists the urge to take his pain medication. Believing that the number and the headaches are linked, Max tries to concentrate on the number through the pain. After passing out, Max has a vision of himself standing in a white void and repeating the digits of the number. Max's neighbors discover him unconscious and revive him, breaking his vision. Giving up, Max trepans himself in the right temple, where he believes his mathematical genius is located. Whether this actually occurs is left ambiguous. Later, Max sits on a park bench and reveals that he is no longer able to perform complex mental calculation. He observes the trees blowing in the breeze, at peace.

Winner for most unusual piece of development this pilot season goes to ABC, which has turned a series of quirky Geico commercials into an actual half-hour comedy project.

"Cavemen" will revolve around three pre-historic men who must battle prejudice as they attempt to live as normal thirtysomethings in modern Atlanta.

Project, from ABC TV Studio, is penned by Joe Lawson, an advertising copywriter who was behind the "Caveman" ads -- as well as other Geico commercials (think the cockney-speaking Geico gecko, and the reality TV spoof "Tiny House").

Daniel Rappaport, Guymon Cassady, Will Speck and Josh Gordon are exec producers. Speck and Gordon, commercial directors who recently helmed the Will Farrell feature "Blades of Glory," are on board to also direct.

The single-camera laffer pilot is based on the Geico ads that promote the insurance company's Web site as so user-friendly that even "a caveman could do it." The spots follow cavemen in modern settings, reacting with offense to the derogatory slogan. In one, a Geico spokesman apologizes and takes the Neanderthals out to dinner.

Other blurbs include the sensitive, modern cavemen peeved at the offending slogan while encountering Geico ads in everyday life, including the airport.

The caveman commercials were created through the Richmond, Va.-based Martin Agency. Jeff Daniel Phillips and Ben Weber play the cavemen in the Geico spots; no word if they'll make the transformation to the TV project.

Few TV shows have come out of the commercial sphere; more frequently, TV characters live on in 30-second spots long after their shows are canceled (think "ALF").

But it's not without precedence: The 2002 CBS comedy "Baby Bob" revolved around a talking baby character that was first seen in a series of dot.com ads. After the Eye canceled "Baby Bob," the character returned to its commercial roots, spending time as a pitchman (pitchbaby?) for Quizno's Subs.

Commanding Heights -- The Battle for the World Economy

I bought the video set from PBS. Excellent commentary on economics, and globalization over the last century. They sum it all up as an age old battle between Capitalism and Socialism. Free Markets versus Government Control.

The Commanding Heights Storyline provides a complete netcast of the six-hour television program as originally broadcast -- in three two-hour episodes. Each episode is subdivided into chapters listed in the chapter menu, together with links to additional related content on the site.

The version now being rebroadcast on PBS television, divided into six one-hour episodes, presents some segments of the story in a different order.

Every time the squirrel's scene ended and the movie flashed to another character in the story, others around us busted up laughing when my 4 year pronounced loudly, "Oh!!!... I want to see the squirrel again"

Reminds me of the old time slapstick from yesteryear, like Tom and Jerry only better...
One scene after another, pictures speak a thousand words, squirrel never talks, only makes sounds.

Repetitious commercials have driven into my young daughter's mind Burger King is the toy sponsor for Ice age 2.
So when she sees the Burger King signe she is just old enough to remind me in her own way we need to stop here.
She didn't want the chicken or the hamburger...
just the toy... and thats ok by me:)
But guess what? In the little brochure that comes with the one of two toys to choose from that says collect all ten...
the picture of the squirrel was not there.
Its easy to believe my daughter wanted the squirrel and was disappointed she could not get it:)
She settled for the prehistoric crocodile shark... or what ever it was.
It is my opinion the squirrel should get a starring role in a spin off from Ice Age.

Ok enough about about the squirrel:
Without giving anything away...
Ice Age 2 was better than Ice Age 1 and I highly recommend the DVD when it comes out as a collector for entertaining the kids, grand kids, nephews, nieces... etc.
Personally? I could sit through it quite a few more times not only for myself but just to watch my daughter enjoy it...
