really it depends on type of account. brokerage account they can do either way but with online discount brokers its based on what they allow access to (some only US and some have for both countries)

Important question: When you (Americans) buy Canadian stocks traded in Canada, how do you buy them? Do you set up a Canadian trading account in Canadian currency, or do you buy the American pinksheet (e.g. KALRF for KLA:TSX-V)? Just curious. What do you recommend?
