Bush Rejected Israeli Plea To Raid Iran

WASHINGTON, Jan. 10, 2009(AP) President George W. Bush rejected a plea from Israel last year to help it raid Iran's main nuclear complex, opting instead to authorize a new U.S. covert action aimed at sabotaging Iran's suspected nuclear weapons program, The New York Times reported.

Israel's request was for specialized bunker-busting bombs that it wanted for an attack that tentatively involved flying over Iraq to reach Iran's major nuclear complex at Natanz, where the country's only known uranium enrichment plant is located, the Times reported Saturday in its online edition. The White House deflected requests for the bombs and flyover but said it would improve intelligence-sharing with Israel on covert U.S. efforts to sabotage Iran's nuclear program.

The covert efforts, which began in early 2008, involved plans to penetrate Iran's nuclear supply chain abroad and undermine electrical systems and other networks on which Iran relies, the Times said, citing interviews with current and former U.S. officials, outside experts and international nuclear inspectors who spoke on condition of anonymity. The covert program will be handed off to President-elect Barack Obama, who will decide whether to continue it.

According to the Times, Mr. Bush decided against an overt attack based on input from top administration officials such as Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who believed that doing so would likely prove ineffective and could ignite a broader Middle East war.

Israel made the push for permission to fly over Iraq for an attack on Iran following its anger over a U.S. intelligence assessment in late 2007 that concluded Iran had effectively suspended its development of nuclear weapons four years earlier. Israel sought to rebut the report, providing evidence to U.S. intelligence officials that they said indicated the Iranians were still working on a weapon.

Gordon Johndroe, spokesman for the National Security Council, declined to comment Saturday.

In an interview with The Associated Press earlier this week, Stephen Hadley, President Bush's national security adviser, said he believed that Iran is the biggest challenge Obama will face in the Middle East and that more sanctions will be needed to force Tehran to forgo its nuclear ambitions and support for extremists. He said the Bush administration has been trying to "shore up and store up leverage" to bequeath to the Obama administration.

Last month, Obama suggested that a combination of economic incentives and tighter sanctions might work. Tehran rejected the proposal. Obama also has said he would pursue tough-minded diplomacy.

U.S. rejected Israeli plea to attack Iran

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush rejected several Israeli requests last year for weapons and permission for a potential airstrike inside Iran, the author of an investigative report told CNN.

Israel approached the White House in early 2008 with three requests for an attack on Iran's main nuclear complex, said New York Times reporter David Sanger. His article appears in the newspaper on Sunday.

According to Sanger, Israel wanted specialized bunker-busting bombs, equipment to help refuel planes making flights into Iran and permission to fly over Iraq to reach the major nuclear complex at Natanz, the site of Iran's only known uranium enrichment plant.

The White House "deflected" the first two requests and denied the last, Sanger said.

Bush, instead, persuaded Israeli officials to not proceed with the attack by sharing with them some details of covert U.S. operations aimed at sabotaging Iran's nuclear ambitions, Sanger said.

The ongoing operations are designed to undermine Iran's ability to produce weapons-grade fuel and designs it needs to produce a workable nuclear weapon, the newspaper said.

"We know that the U.S. has been trying to conduct covert industrial espionage, if you will, against Iran's nuclear program for many years," said CNN's Pentagon Correspondent Barbara Starr. "[They have been] going to the suppliers, going other places; trying to make sure that things get messed up, if you will; that parts may not be what they should be; that certain processes may not work right. Anything that they can do to jam the work to delay the program."

Sanger said he based his report on conversations with intelligence officials, none of whom would speak on the record because of the topic's sensitivity.

"I suspect the Bush administration probably isn't going to comment very much on the details of this story, given the nature of this kind of intelligence operation and the sensitivity of the relationship with Israel," he said.

Sanger said President-elect Barack Obama, who said during the campaign he wants to engage in dialogue with Iran, now inherits the operation.

"He has got to figure out how to square the circle of having direct talks with the country while these are going on, or he could elect, I imagine, to modify this program or suspend it," Sanger said.

In his first post-election news conference, Obama said a nuclear-armed Iran would be "unacceptable." He also said he would help mount an international effort to prevent it from happening.

Iran maintains its nuclear program is for energy purposes only. It has been engaged in an escalating war of words with Israel, whom it accuses of trying to destabilize the republic.

Israel has said it will not rule out military action to halt Iran's nuclear aspirations.

USS George H.W. Bush commissioned



(CNN) -- An aircraft carrier named after the first President Bush was commissioned Saturday in Norfolk, Virginia.

"Those who are sitting out there, where I was, 65 years ago, preparing to serve aboard your new ship, I wish I was sitting right out there with you," the carrier's 84-year-old namesake told sailors at the commissioning ceremony.

"As you prepare to man this ship, I do know that you take with you the hopes and dreams of every American who cherishes freedom and peace, and you take with you the undying respect and admiration of the entire Bush family," he said.

The 1,092-foot, 20-story USS George H.W. Bush was decorated with red, white and blue banners for Saturday's ceremony at Naval Station Norfolk. VideoWatch video of the aircraft carrier »

The 41st president joined the Navy at 18 and served as an aviator in World War II. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and three Air Medals for his Navy service in the Pacific during the war, according to the Department of Defense. His time in the Navy ended after about four years.

About 17,000 people were expected to attend Saturday's ceremony. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Vice President Dick Cheney and Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine were there, as was Bush's son President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura.

"Laura and I are thrilled to be here to help commission an awesome ship and to honor an awesome man, President George H.W. Bush," the president said. "So what do you give a guy who has been blessed and has just about everything he has ever needed? Well, an aircraft carrier."

The ship, comprising 47,000 tons of structural steel and about 500 tons of aluminum, is the last of the Nimitz class of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers.

The ship's construction began in 2003. It was finished nearly three years later.

The vessel will carry about 6,000 Navy personnel, the Department of Defense said.

After the ceremony, the president left Norfolk for Maryland's Andrews Air Force Base on what was probably his last Air Force One flight. From Andrews, he was expected to take a helicopter to Washington.

A lawyer who already has two conferences pending before the U.S. Supreme Court on the issue of Barack Obama's eligibility to be president has filed a new lawsuit, this one on behalf of a retired military colonel who would need to know whether to follow any orders issued by Obama as commander-in-chief.


Philip Berg's earlier case and a request for an injunction in the case are scheduled for conferences with the justices on Jan. 9 and Jan. 16.

The new case, filed with co-counsel Lawrence J. Joyce, was submitted to U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., and names as defendant "Barry Soetoro a/k/a Obama."

It demands to know Obama's real name and his constitutional qualifications to occupy the Oval Office. The plaintiff is Gregory S. Hollister, a resident of Colorado Springs, who has "standing" and "needs a decision so he knows whether or not to follow any order of Soetoro a/k/a Obama."

Berg reported the case is in the nature of an interpleader, shifting the burden of proof to Obama and Joe Biden.

"I am determined, on behalf of the 320 million citizens in the United States, to see that 'our U.S. Constitution' is followed. Specifically, in the case of Soetoro a/k/a Obama, does he meet the constitutional qualifications for president?" Berg said.

He said he doubts that is the case based on his information that Obama was born in Kenya, his mother was not yet 19, Obama later was a citizen of Indonesia and several other factors.

"I am appalled that the main stream media continues to ignore this issue as we are headed to a 'Constitutional Crisis.' There is nothing more important than our U.S. Constitution and it must be enforced," he said.

Berg said he was pleased the U.S. Supreme Court has scheduled two conferences to look into the merits of the claims in his earlier case.

"I know that Mr. Obama is not a constitutionally qualified 'natural-born' citizen and therefore, is ineligible to assume the office of the president of the United States," he continued. "Obama knows he is not 'natural born' as he knows where he was born and he knows he was legally adopted/acknowledged in Indonesia; is an attorney, Harvard Law head of the Law Review and graduate who taught constitutional law; knows the Obama candidacy is the biggest 'hoax' attempted on the citizens of the United States in over 200 years; places our constitution in a 'crisis' situation; and Obama is in a situation where he can be blackmailed by leaders around the world."

WND reported earlier on a campaign to seek members of Congress to object to the Electoral College vote when it is presented for affirmation.

More than a dozen cases have been brought into various courts challenging Obama's eligibility. Several have reached the Supreme Court.

They all in various ways allege Obama does not meet the "natural born citizen" clause of the U.S. Constitution, Article 2, Section 1, which reads, "No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President."

Some of the legal challenges have alleged Obama was not born in Hawaii, as he insists, but in Kenya. Obama's American mother, the suits contend, was too young at the time of his birth to confer American citizenship to her son under the law at the time.

Other challenges also have focused on Obama's citizenship through his father, a Kenyan subject to the jurisdiction of the United Kingdom at the time of his birth, thus making him a dual citizen. Such cases contend the framers of the Constitution excluded dual citizens from qualifying as natural born.

Several details of Obama's past have added twists to the question of his eligibility and citizenship, including his family's move to Indonesia when he was a child, his travel to Pakistan in the '80s when such travel was forbidden to American citizens and conflicting reports from Obama's family about his place of birth.

His campaign posted the image of a "Certification of Live Birth" online when the questions first arose, but critics have dismissed that as irrelevant, since at the time Hawaii granted such documents to parents whose children were born outside the state.

WND has reported on two of the cases that the Supreme Court justices apparently reviewed, but refused to continue to a full hearing.

Those cases were brought by Cort Wrotnowski and Leo Donofrio. Both challenged Obama on essentially the same issue: allegations that dual citizenship based on a father who was a British subject and a mother who was an American minor disqualified him for office.

A partial listing and status update for several of the cases surrounding Obama's eligibility to serve as president is below:

Philip J. Berg, a Pennsylvania Democrat, demanded that the courts verify Obama's original birth certificate and other documents proving his American citizenship. Supreme Court conferences on the case and its motions are scheduled Jan. 9 and 16.


Leo Donofrio of New Jersey filed a lawsuit claiming Obama's dual citizenship disqualified him from serving as president. His case was considered in conference by the U.S. Supreme Court but denied a full hearing.

Cort Wrotnowski filed suit against Connecticut's secretary of state, making a similar argument to Donofrio. His case was considered in conference by the U.S. Supreme Court, but was denied a full hearing.

Former presidential candidate Alan Keyes headlines a list of people filing a suit in California, in a case on which the United States Justice Foundation is working, that asks the secretary of state to refuse to allow the state's 55 Electoral College votes to be cast in the 2008 presidential election until Obama verifies his eligibility to hold the office. The case is pending, and lawyers are seeking the public's support.

Chicago's Andy Martin sought legal action requiring Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle to release Obama's vital statistics record. The case was dismissed by Hawaii Circuit Court Judge Bert Ayabe.


Lt. Col. Donald Sullivan sought a temporary restraining order to stop the Electoral College vote in North Carolina until Barack Obama's eligibility could be confirmed, alleging doubt about Obama's citizenship. His case was denied.


In Ohio, David M. Neal sued to force the secretary of state to request documents from the Federal Elections Commission, the Democratic National Committee, the Ohio Democratic Party and Obama to show the presidential candidate was born in Hawaii. The case was denied.


In Washington state, Steven Marquis sued the secretary of state seeking a determination on Obama's citizenship. The case was denied.


In Georgia, Rev. Tom Terry asked the state Supreme Court to authenticate Obama's birth certificate. His request for an injuction against Georgia's secretary of state was denied by Georgia Superior Court Judge Jerry W. Baxter.

California attorney Orly Taitz also has brought a complaint alleging Obama is not a "natural born" citizen and has written an open letter to the Supreme Court asking for the issue to be resolved.

Pennsylvania attorney James D. Schneller is suing Pennsylvania's secretary of state, Pedro A. Cortes., to prevent transmittal of the certified electoral vote, claiming severe moral consequences and infringement upon even freedom of religion if Obama's eligibility is not established. His case is active before the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.

In Washington state, attorney Stephen Pidgeon is representing 12 plaintiffs in a case that claims to have standing under a unique Washington statute that allows any registered voter to challenge the election of someone who, at the time of the election, was ineligible to hold the office. The suit intends to include a subpoena of Obama's Hawaii birth certificate. The case is scheduled for argument before the Washington Supreme Court on Jan. 8.
Last month, WND reported on the potential complications an ineligible president could create.

"Should Senator Obama be discovered, after he takes office, to be ineligible for the Office of President of the United States of America and, thereby, his election declared void," argues the Alan Keyes case pending in California, "Americans will suffer irreparable harm in that (a) usurper will be sitting as the President of the United States, and none of the treaties, laws, or executive orders signed by him will be valid or legal."

With such high stakes potentially at risk, WND earlier launched a letter campaign to contact Electoral College members and urge them to review the controversy.

That followed a campaign that sent more than 60,000 letters by overnight delivery to the U.S. Supreme Court when one case contesting Obama's eligibility for the Oval Office was pending.

A separate petition, already signed by more than 200,000 also is ongoing asking authorities in the election to seek proof Obama was born in the U.S. or that he fulfills the "natural-born American" clause in the Constitution.

WND senior reporter Jerome Corsi had gone to both Kenya and Hawaii prior to the election to investigate issues surrounding Obama's birth. But his research and discoveries only raised more questions.

The biggest question was why, if a Hawaii birth certificate exists as his campaign has stated, Obama hasn't simply ordered it made available to settle the rumors

The governor's office in Hawaii said there is a valid certificate but rejected requests for access and left ambiguous its origin: Does the certificate on file with the Department of Health indicate a Hawaii birth or was it generated after the Obama family registered a Kenyan birth in Hawaii?

Barack Obama was ordered by the U.S. Supreme Court to produce a certified copy of his birth certificate by Dec. 1. He didn’t. A U.S. Supreme Court clerk said that the justices will publish an opinion but would not commit to a time frame.

Though there are many public documents that Obama has refused to produce, some of which are listed below, the most important one is a certified copy of his birth certificate. Anyone who was born in an American hospital since the turn of the last century can produce a birth certificate and, if they refuse a court order, a copy could be subpoenaed. The fact that Obama cannot or will not produce the most basic documents is really strange; the fact that not one court in this country has ordered them to be produced in evidence for the record is stranger still.

A made man

The public records of most political figures are already in the public domain by the time they run for office so there is no hiding them. In the case of Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), all Vietnam-era POW records, including his own, were conveniently sealed with his blessing in the 1990s.

The fact that Obama’s public records from infancy through adulthood do not exist suggests that his tracks began being covered when he was very young. The fact that records generated while he was a public figure in high elected political office have been in a perpetual process of being expunged further indicates that Obama, in the jargon of organized criminals, has been a "made man" since before he was born.

Indeed, a genealogical investigation into Barack Obama by Don Nicoloff (The IO, Sept. and Oct., 2008) strongly suggests that Obama was "created" and groomed his entire life to fill some purpose that is not likely to be in the best interests of America or her people. As bizarre as some of Nicoloff’s conclusions about Obama may seem, his behavior and the behavior of those who should be questioning his motives support rather than undermine Nicoloff’s assertions.


The courts

The plot against America thickens even more when you consider the manner in which state and federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, has received, docketed and accepted filings into cases challenging Obama’s citizenship status only to sidestep rulings on procedural grounds. It should be of particular interest to Republicans that Obama would rather spend an estimated (to date) $500,000 on high-powered law firms to block the release of key records (like a birth certificate or a passport) than spend a few bucks arranging for them to be made available.


Proof of live birth controversy

When the issue of Obama’s citizenship status came up in June, 2008, his campaign quickly posted an electronic version of his Hawaiian "CERTIFICATION OF LIVE BIRTH" and posted it to the Obama 2008 campaign website. The document was allegedly authenticated by the Hawaii Department of Health and FactCheck.org, as his "birth certificate." But it is not a birth certificate. The Hawaiian "CERTIFICATION OF LIVE BIRTH" is a document available to any child in Hawaii over one year of age, regardless of where the child was born. The document posted to the campaign website and reproduced in The IO (Oct., 2008) clearly states at the top, "CERTIFICATION OF LIVE BIRTH.

Additionally, the "certification" document Obama posted states at the bottom, "ANY ALTERATIONS INVALIDATE THIS CERTIFICATE." Forensic analysis of the document Obama posted as proof he was born in Hawaii contains numerous anomalies that indicate it is a forgery (The IO, Oct., 2008). Proof that the document does not evidence Obama’s live birth in Hawaii can be inferred by the Supreme Court ordering that he produce other documents to prove he is a natural born U.S. citizen.

The Hawaiian "CERTIFICATE OF LIVE BIRTH" is a Hawaiian birth certificate issued a child born in Hawaii. If Obama has one, he is expending a lot of effort and resources to hide it from us (To our knowledge, a social security number for Obama has not yet been located, either).


Media sinning by silence

The media, both the liberal and conservative, sin by silence by refusing to take up the issue. The liberals (and Obama himself) are doing Obama supporters a terrible disservice by not admitting that the controversy exists. Most "Obamatons" have been celebrating since Nov. 4 in anticipation of the coming presidency and have no idea that serious challenges as to the actual identity of their "Obamassiah" have reached the Supreme Court.

The conservative media is betraying their listeners, watchers and readers by pretending they don’t know anything about the Obama citizenship controversy and by not demanding that certain records that would reveal his true history as a citizen and as a public official be made available. Even rabid "liberal haters" Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage and Bill O’Reilly are silent on the issue and play dumb when asked (even though they have all received thousands of calls and emails on the subject).


Risk to national security

When asked what they would think if it turned out that Obama had lied about being born in Hawaii, two Obama supporters said they would not care. When asked if they thought nondisclosure of his true identity could compromise national security, one said, "No" and the other said, "I hope not."

The attitude is short-sighted and shockingly naive. First of all, adults should seriously question the motives of anyone hiding his true identity. What can we infer from a president-elect who has already snubbed a U.S. Supreme Court order to produce documentation proving he is the "natural born U.S. citizen Barack Obama"—the next president of the United States ?

With the documentation Obama has provided to prove who he is, where he was born, and where he has been for large segments of his life, he could not get a minimum security clearance from any branch of the military. Since the office of president comes with it the responsibility of being commander-in-chief of the armed forces, the threat to national security jumps to "code red" if the man with his finger on THE button suddenly chose to reveal his true identity at that moment—and he is not one of us?

Debt Bomb ~ Obama Says Budget Deficit To Hit $1 Trillion Soon

President-elect Barack Obama said Tuesday that he expects to inherit a U.S. budget deficit approaching $1 trillion and that his administration would have to make some tough budget choices.

Just after meeting with his economic team, Obama said it was possible that trillion-dollar deficits could stretch into coming years and that he and his team want to instill a "sense of responsibility" about future budget choices.

Obama, who takes over from President Bush on Jan. 20, is seeking quick action from Congress on a package of spending and tax-cut measures that would total nearly $800 billion over next two years.

While many in the Democratic-led Congress are also eager to move swiftly on an economic stimulus, Republicans are insisting that the package receive careful scrutiny to avoid wasteful spending.

Any package would add to already spiraling budget deficits.

Obama spoke about the fiscal outlook a day before the Congressional Budget Office, the nonpartisan budget analyst for the U.S. Congress, plans to unveil its latest estimates on the budget deficit.

Private analysts expect the report to show a deficit of more than $1 trillion for the fiscal year 2009 that ends in September. That would be more than double the roughly $400 billion shortfall of 2008.

Obama, who is trying to garner broad backing for the stimulus plan and has been courting Republicans as well as Democrats, said Americans who voted for him were "demanding that we restore a sense of responsibility," including on budget practices.

He said his pick to become the new White House budget director, Peter Orszag, was forecasting that the budget deficit would likely approach $1 trillion "before we've even started" and that more deficits could be coming in years ahead.

"The reason I raise this is because we're going to have to stop talking about budget reform" and realize it is "an absolute necessity." He said a rescue package is needed but that "we're not going to be able to expect the American people to support" the rescue unless steps are taken to reform the budget.

Orszag, who attended the meeting that Obama held at his transition headquarters in Washington, has been head of the Congressional Budget Office for the past two years.

But the budget report to be issued Wednesday will be prepared by acting CBO director Robert Sunshine.

There was a Chemistry professor in a large college that had some
exchange students in the class. One day while the class was in the lab the Prof noticed one young man (exchange student) who kept rubbing his back and stretching as if his back hurt.

The professor asked the young man what was the matter. The student told him he had a bullet lodged in his back. He had been shot while fighting communists in his native country who were trying to overthrow his country's government and install a new communist government.

You continue until you have all four sides of the fence up with a gate in the last side. The pigs, who are used to the free corn, start to come through the gate to eat, you slam the gate on them and catch the whole herd.

Suddenly the wild pigs have lost their freedom. They run around and around inside the fence, but they are caught. Soon they go back to eating the free corn. They are so used to it that they have forgotten how To forage in the woods for themselves, so they accept their captivity.

The young man then told the professor that is exactly what he sees happening to America. The government keeps pushing us toward Communism/Socialism and keeps spreading the free corn out in the form of programs such as supplemental income, tax credit for unearned income, tobacco subsidies, dairy subsidies, payments not to plant crops (CRP), welfare, medicine, drugs, free medical, etc.; while we continually lose our freedoms - just a little at a time.

One should always remember 'There is no such thing as a free Lunch!'

Also, a politician will never provide a service for you cheaper than you can do it yourself.

Obama Has No Timetable for Stimulus Package

President-elect Barack Obama does not have a timetable to develop and pass an economic stimulus package, according to one of his aides on the transition team.

Still, Obama wants to get a plan in place as soon as possible given the deteriorating economy, this person said. However, it is important to get the stimulus plan right in order to get the maximum impact from the effort.

Previously, there had been talk of a Jan. 20 deadline for passage of an economic plan. But this is looking increasingly unlikely.

Obama arrives in Washington, D.C., on Sunday and plans to hold meetings all week in order to develop a stimulus bill.

There have been reports that Obama plans to meet with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi on Monday to discuss the timing and scope of the legislation, intended to spur job growth and likely to include big infrastructure investments and tax cuts.

Some media reports have pegged the expected cost of a stimulus plan at between $675 billion and $775 billion.

But Obama aides have been quoted as saying the president-elect will aim to persuade Americans that a nearly $1 trillion government investment is crucial to create jobs, and help repair shattered state coffers.

Earlier in the week, congressional Republicans said they would work with Democrats to craft a stimulus plan but only if GOP ideas are considered.

"We need the right mix of tax relief and other measures to grow the economy," Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said in a statement Monday.


"Taxpayers are in no mood to have a single dollar wasted, but it's not yet been explained how their tax dollars will be protected ... in a rush to spend their money," McConnell added.

His comments and a simultaneous statement by House Republican Leader John Boehner of Ohio indicate that Republicans are emerging from their political fox hole with a traditional call for smaller government—even as many in the GOP ranks have joined Democrats in support of government rescues for the ailing financial sector.


Obama is proposing a package of as much as $775 billion over two years, his advisers say, though they think add-ons by lawmakers could raise the price to $850 billion.

His advisers say an $850 billion plan could generate about 3.2 million jobs by the first quarter of 2011.

Some economists favor an even bigger spending stimulus: up to $1.3 trillion.

Vice President-elect Joe Biden said this month that lawmakers will not be allowed to attach earmarks— pet projects —to the legislation.

McConnell and Boehner said the Democrats' ambitious timetable leaves little chance to ensure those goals are met.

Both said there should be hearings on what's in the bill and that the legislation should be posted online for public review for a week before it's brought up for votes in the House and Senate.
