(Reuters) - The Indian unit of Britain's BG Group is in talks with India's state-run Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) to acquire a stake in a gas block off the country's east coast, the BG India's president said on Wednesday.

"We had given a proposal to ONGC a while back. The ball is in their court," Walter Simpson, President and Managing Director of BG India, told reporters on the sidelines of an industry conference.

ONGC's chairman said in June the firm was in talks with BG and Italian oil major ENI to sell up to 30 percent in the block to help investment of about $7.7 billion to develop the gas field.

One word from you on some of these oil and gas stories that we have been getting, an ONGC, a Reliance Industries or even a Cairn India ??

Reliance looks a little tired and I do not think it has legs to move up on its own. It will move with the market, 1040 to 1060 is a very very strong resistance which I do not see being crossed in this leg of the rally unless the Nifty does something spectacular. I would rather go with ONGC at this point, which I see going up to 285 to 288, so possibly another 4-5% and Cairn I am bullish on and I feel it can go to around 60 levels.

Other than that, I really do not have a view. Cairn 360 is where I would talk of booking some profits but a very clear no at these levels. ONGC can be traded for the next few days for Rs 10 to 12.

Shares in Indian explorer Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) jumped as much as 5.1% today, after the state-run company received the government's approval for a stock split and bonus issue.

Oil Minister Murli Deora told Reuters the cabinet had approved issue of one free share to ONGC's stock holders for each share held, but did not say what the ratio was for stock split.

ONGC had proposed to the government to split each share into two ahead of a planned share sale in the company, Chairman RS Sharma said last month.

Shares in ONGC, India's second-most valuable company at more than $62 billion, were trading 2.8% up at 1324 rupees ($29.22), having risen as high as 1353.85 rupees earlier.

The shares are up about 12% this year, compared with a 14% rise in the main index.

ONGC expects its follow-on share sale to hit the markets in March, Sharma said yesterday. The government has approved a 5% stake sale in ONGC that is expected to raise more than $3 billion.
