    The Stock Trader's Almanac History

Jeffrey Hirsch learned about the stock markets from his father, Yale Hirsch, the founder of the Stock Trader’s Almanac. Drawing on years of market study, Yale created the unique Stock Trader’s Almanac, in 1966. It was first published in 1967. This book allowed Mr. Hirsch to distill his lifelong interest in stock market history, cycles and patterns into a practical working tool for the average investor. It was the first compilation of the market’s seasonal trends and tendencies combined with a calendar and laid out for use by non-institutional investors. It also brought to the general public many “statistically predictable” market phenomena that have since become well known, such as the impact of the four-year Presidential Election Cycle, plus discoveries such as the “January Barometer” and the “Santa Claus Rally.”

By organizing a wealth of usable information on a calendar basis, the Stock Trader’s Almanac became an immediate success. Since then Mr. Hirsch has found that some days of the week (and some months of the year) are better for stocks than others. And, remarkably, that the stock market tends to make almost all its gains during just six particular months of the year. Yale calls his discovery the “Best Six Months” strategy. The rest of the time (most years) traders would be better off putting their money in T-bills and going fishing.

Today's expanded 192-page Stock Trader’s Almanac follows the original pattern but contains the results of 40 more years of market research. It continues to serve as the ultimate desktop market data bank, showing the market’s likely direction every hour, day, week and month based on historical precedent, allowing shrewd investors to maximize profit potential.

With the phenomenal rise and volatility of commodities since 2000, we saw the need to break out that segment of the market and provide readers with a historical view of the commodities market to help them better plan for the future. Readers will find that the Commodity Trader’s Almanac provides the same level of vital information and analysis on commodities as the classic Stock Trader’s Almanac does for stocks, alerting them to little-known market patterns and tendencies that help them forecast trends with accuracy and confidence.

In the future, we hope to provide historical market data for all markets worldwide. Since investment success is a never-ending challenge, we also publish a monthly newsletter to keep readers abreast of our current research and thinking on the market. The Almanac Investor newsletter is a 16-page monthly guide to market patterns, cycles, fundamental developments, strategies and stock selection, and updates and expands the strategies outlined in the Stock Trader’s Almanac.
