Rangers win an interesting one. Tried to blow it a couple times, but heroics from the unlikely saved them. Jonah Heim makes the big defensive boner, then comes through with the walk off.
Already we have a 1 game lead on Houston.
Altuve simply wanted to stay in Houston so no need for any Borass shenanigans---$125M/5yr extension ain't too shabby for a 34 yr old
Jose Altuve must know more about Scott Boras' negotiating skills than Blake Snell, Jordon Montgomery, Cody Bellinger and Matt Chapman.
Just like everybody figured---Soto wins it with his defense LOL
Depends, but I see players leaving agents all the time. The rumors I've heard is Boras is crying collusion, and we will see what comes from it. I would think the owners have conferred with lawyers this time before colluding.
Rightfully so--he finished ST strong but hasn't proven he can hit ML pitching consistently
It's beginning to look like Hal Steinbrenner is more concerned about paying the additional tax versus adding players that would put the Yankees over the top.
Another indication that Yankees organization have little confidence in Oswaldo Cabrera manning third until DJ returns from the IL.
I'm sure Boras is screaming collusion by the owners. When a player signs with an agent is it for a number of years or can the player find a new agent at will? I'm sure some players are not questioning doing business with Boras.
Yankees reported offer to Jordan Montgomery was hilariously awful
Several teams missed out on Jordan Montgomery, including his old team, the New York Yankees. New York had interest, but the veteran chose the Arizona Diamondbacks instead after receiving a terrible offer from his old team.

?The #Yankees were in on Montgomery but their offers required heavy deferals of 15-20 plus years which would have made AAV much less than #Diamondbacks offer.

It was a good trade for the Yankees. They got something for nothing in the deal.
Of course we did, but at the time, Boras was looking for a 6 year deal. Monty certainly wanted to come back. Boras screwed it up.
For who? Tampa needs the points plus we had a tough game the night before against Fl Panthers. Maybe this year we can get by the first round.
Cashman traded for Berti so that he could save a few hundred bucks on uniforms. I'm sure a clubhouse attendant is unstiching the jerseys where it used to say 'Kiner-Falefa" even as I type.
Speaking of hockey---great game tonight
I'm surprised the Rangers never made an offer for him since he ended up with a one year deal for $25M. Ranger fans deserved better imo.
No, but we now have Lorenzen and DeGrom, Scherzer and Mahle maybe back one day.
Figured he'd get moved rather than lose him on waivers---good move....
The Ben Rortvedt question has been answered.
Good to see you Sox--knew we'd smoke you out
Who'd a thunk the Pats and Red Sox would be cellar dwellers for the next two years at least. Also that the Yankees would have only won one WS after wasting all that money. But we have the Celtics and Bruins who have been very competitive these last two years.
I'm hoping we can get to .500 but pitching will be a problem, a big problem.
Gumby's wife is a doctor---studied at Harvard after getting a degree from University of South Carolina School of Medicine---she is in residency at a hospital in Boston---they lived there this offseason--none of that helped the BoSox seal the deal

2104 can't come fast enough for Dead Sox fans as a familiar pattern develops
I think the 2025 FA class might have something to do with the over 30 guys this year not getting long term deals
I see a lot of players thinking twice before having Scott Boras represent them.

Was paying Jordon Montgomery $25 million for one year too much for the Rangers?
That was tough to watch-----he had a good ST at the dish...
Probably both---in any case, Monty is not a $52.5M pitcher....I'll take Luis Gil at 1/50th the price, Alex
Either Jordon Montgomery didn't want to have anything to do with Brian Cashman or Hal Steinbrenner wasn't willing to accept the tax consequences of a $25 million contract.
I continue to say the D-backs and Phillies will be the first two wc. The question is who is the 3rd wildcard. Any team that doesn't win the NL Central (Which will probably be the cubs). The mets, The Padres and The giants. That is the comp for that last wc. I personally don't think the NL Central will get more than 1 team though. So I really think Mets, Padres, Giants will compete for the last spot. What gives me hope, is I think the marlins won't be very good this year, and the nats shouldn't be very good (Although I do Like Gore and Gray at the top, as they have potential). The mets have historically always played the phillies well. Where the giants and padres have to play each other, plus all those games against the dodgers and D-backs. Hence I'm feeling a little more optimistic on the Mets than I have all offseason. That Jd Martinez signing changed my view by about 5-7 wins (By Himself), Now it is not that I think JD is gonna help that much, it also means I don't think they are gonna pitch around pete like I feared before, when you have no protection for him in my opinion.
Whenever you read rumors of long term deals with Boras's clients, that's just him fishing.
Seems, either GMs are onto him, or it just doesn't work any more.
I'm expecting a lawsuit from him vs the teams....of course that would be a dangerous move for him.
I'm happy Monty found a deal, I hope he fires Boras immediately. Also happy Monty is out of the AL.
Don't know how we couldn't make a 1 year deal happen.
Of course we only paid Lorenzen $4.5 million for a 1 year, so financially anyway, we won.....let the comparing of the two seasons begin
That division should be super competitive.......
For Scott Boras, the offseason is finally over. It wasn't a good time.
https://sports.yahoo.com/scott-boras-finishes-offseason-to-forget-with-jordan-montgomerys-1-year-deal-044015216.html
The 2023-24 MLB offseason will be remembered by many as the winter in which Shohei Ohtani signed his record-shattering, 10-year, $700 million contract. Or for the Los Angeles Dodgers' overall $1 billion offensive on the free market. Or for the New York Yankees landing Juan Soto in a blockbuster trade with the San Diego Padres.
It was a lively offseason, but the storyline that took the longest to develop was that of Boras and his big four free agents. Boras entered the winter counting half of Yahoo Sports' top 10 free agents as clients: reigning Cy Young winner Blake Snell; former MVP Cody Bellinger; playoff hero Jordan Montgomery; defensive ace Matt Chapman; and Korean import Jung Hoo Lee.
Lee quickly signed a $113 million deal with the San Francisco Giants, and that was absolutely a win for Boras. However, the four other players were expected to sign deals bigger than that.
None of them did.
Instead, all four of them took their free agencies into late February or March, then signed shorter-term deals with opt-outs that give them the ability to retest the market next offseason if they perform as well as last year. Montgomery was the last to sign, agreeing to a one-year, $25 million deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday. Suffice to say, that was not Boras' plan
The guaranteed money doled out to the top 10 free agents shows how badly this went (Boras clients in bold):
Shohei Ohtani: 10 years, $700 million
Yoshinobu Yamamoto: 12 years, $325 million
Aaron Nola: seven years, $172 million
Blake Snell: two years, $62 million
Cody Bellinger: three years, $80 million
Jordan Montgomery: one year, $25 million
Sonny Gray: three years, $75 million
Matt Chapman: three years, $54 million
Josh Hader: five years, $95 million
Jung Hoo Lee: six years, $113 million
Not a bad time to be a Snakes fan. They've certainly upped the ante in the NL west. Colorado is the only team in the division whose season will end in May this year.
A couple of days ago the rumor was Monty and a long term contract. Now he signs a one year deal with an option year. lol.
Monty to D'backs $25M/1yr with player option incentive
https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/39817355/source-diamondbacks-jordan-montgomery-agree-deal
Knowing Cashman they'll send Wells down.
Gonne be interesting to see what they do with Rortvedt----I suspect he's trade bait walkin'--he's out of options and would hit waivers if sent down
Play ball!!
The unanswered question is did the bookie ever get paid? And if so did he return it?
My copy came in the mail today. Money can wait. lol.

Well, beat the drum and hold the phone - the sun came out today!
We're born again, there's new grass on the field.
A-roundin' third, and headed for home, it's a brown-eyed handsome man;
Anyone can understand the way i feel.
Chorus:
Oh, put me in, coach - i'm ready to play today;
Put me in, coach - i'm ready to play today;
Look at me, i can be centerfield.
Well, i spent some time in the mudville nine, watchin' it from the bench;
You know i took some lumps when the mighty casey struck out.
So say hey willie, tell ty cobb and joe dimaggio;
Don't say "it ain't so", you know the time is now.
Chorus
Yeah! i got it, i got it!
Got a beat-up glove, a homemade bat, and brand-new pair of shoes;
You know i think it's time to give this game a ride.
Just to hit the ball and touch 'em all - a moment in the sun;
(pop) it's gone and you can tell that one goodbye!

Field of Dreams (1989)
"The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time.
This field, this game, is a part of our past, Ray.
It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again.
Oh people will come, Ray. People will most definitely come."
