Third Pundit Paid by Bush Administration
Yet another columnist was given a contract by the government to promote a Bush initiative, a Salon.com exclusive confirms. Michael McManus, a marriage advocate whose syndicated column, “Ethics & Religion,” appears in 50 newspapers, was hired as a subcontractor by the Department of Health and Human Services to foster a Bush-approved marriage initiative. He wrote favorably of the plan in his columns without disclosing to readers he was being paid. The Salon story follows similar reports that broadcaster Armstrong Williams and syndicated columnist Maggie Gallagher also engaged in unethical agreements.

In the wake of these stories (and others likely to come), Democratic Senators Edward Kennedy and Frank Lautenberg are introducing the “Stop Government Propaganda Act” in the Senate next week. The bill seeks to prohibit the funneling of funds through the Executive branch for “publicity or propaganda purposes,” unless legally authorized, and allows whistleblowers to bring up lawsuits against the government when the Justice Department does not respond. “It’s time for Congress to shut down the Administration’s propaganda mill,” Lautenberg said in a statement.

"All truth passes through three states," wrote Arthur Schopenhauer. "First it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident."
