Aide says senators being given time to sign call for inquiry

RAW STORY

An aide to the senator who is circulating a letter calling for an investigation into how ‘Jeff Gannon’ got access to the White House told RAW STORY Thursday the letter would be delivered to President Bush Friday morning.

The aide, who asked not to be named, said Sen. Durbin’s office had experienced difficulty tracking down Democratic senators in their home districts and were allowing other member offices more time to decide.

Congress is in recess this week.

Durbin’s aide declined to say how many senators had signed on. The senator’s office has said they will brief RAW STORY on the letter and provide more detail Friday morning.

Five senatorial offices–Durbin, Kennedy, Kerry, Lautenberg and Reid–have said publicly that they had or will sign the letter to President Bush, which demands a full and transparent investigation into how a conservative correspondent allegedly got access to classified information and the president.

“Given the unprecedented level of security in Washington since 9/11, it is troubling that that a non-journalist using a false name and working for a sham news organization could have gained regular access to the White House for such an extended period of time,” Durbin writes.

Durbin and other Democrats have expressed particular concern about the Gannon scandal in relation to revelations that the White House paid conservative commentators to promote Bush policies.

“There’s more screening to get into a Bush for President rally than the White House press room,” Sen. Kerry’s press secretary April Boyd said Thursday. “A Girl Scout troop can’t even go on

a public tour of the White House, but a Republican Party right wing activist of sketchy origins got daily West Wing access? This latest scandal makes Armstrong Williams look like a saint by comparison.”

Senator Kerry’s press secretary Laura Capps said Gannon’s access is evidence that the administration is desperate to promote unpopular policies.

“Time and time again the administration will go to extreme lengths to promote their unpopular programs,” Capps said. Gannon “just shows the lengths to which they will go. If they have to buy off reporters or journalists to prove their point, it shows the faulty ground of [their] arguments.”
