InterTrust Announces Secure Media Player Development Suite
Combination of Open Media Standards and Flexible DRM Tools Offer Platform Independence, Rapid Time to Market, and Content Portability

SANTA CLARA, Calif., May 15 /PRNewswire/ -- InterTrust Technologies Corporation (Nasdaq: ITRU - news), the leading developer of peer-to-peer, distributed Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology today announced a suite of development tools for media player developers. The InterTrust Extensible Media (XM) Development Suite provides content owners, multimedia authors, and application developers with a broad set of offerings designed to fast track development of secure music, video and multimedia players. By combining the power of InterTrust's flexible DRM platform with open standard multimedia coding technologies, InterTrust frees developers from closed solutions that are bound to fixed environments.

The XM Development Suite will greatly reduce the cost of content production and enable end users to play their music and videos across all of their devices. Developers such as MUSICMATCH, RioPort and Envivio will use the development suite to build secure music, video and multimedia players with open standards, including MP3, AAC and MPEG-4, leveraging InterTrust's robust DRM platform. Portability of content and the concept of ``author-once, run-anywhere'' are the hallmarks of the InterTrust Extensible Media design philosophy.

``This is the next generation of our flexible DRM platform for media,'' said Talal Shamoon, InterTrust's EVP Business Development. ``InterTrust's DRM technology forms the security backbone of most of the major music players today. Unlike other DRM solutions, Extensible Media is built on open media standards to deliver a cornerstone product. And end users benefit because they will have a much wider choice of content and players to choose from.''

Satisfying the diverse needs of the media player applications community are three product offerings:

-- XM Audio is a pre-certified component for audio players, targeted at
developers who seek a rapid time to market solution. XM Audio provides
a secure, tamper resistant media plugin for InterTrust compatible file
formats and codecs such as Bluematter(TM), MP3 and AAC. Its high level
object-oriented interface is easy to use and ready to plug-and-play.
Additionally, XM Audio supports music and associated content such as
album art and lyrics.
-- XM Developer Kit is an extensible audio player toolkit, comprised of
basic building block codecs and DRM business processors, which gives
developers many options in constructing a media player from the ground
up. The developer kit uses InterTrust's Xaudio(TM) framework to provide
flexible, advanced media capabilities. The kit enables developers to
use standard codec modules in Xaudio -- including MP3 and AAC, in
addition to DRM components -- that support standard business models.
Alternatively, developers may add custom media processing modules. XM
Developer Kit also provides readers for popular formats such as
Universal's Bluematter(TM) and InterTrust Secure Audio File (SAF)
format or developers may write their own custom modules. More than
60 million copies of InterTrust's Xaudio toolkit, running on over
20 platforms, are in commercial distribution today.
-- XM MPEG-4 Support. The XM framework marks a further step towards full
support for a secure, open standards-based multimedia infrastructure by
building tools that leverage the standard MPEG-4 Intellectual Property
Management and Protection (IPMP) interfaces. InterTrust's IPMP
technology will provide fine-grain rights management and governance in
MPEG-4 applications, which individually manages and protects valuable
content that has many elements. MPEG-4 is gaining rapid acceptance as
the standard for multimedia content distribution as content owners,
multimedia authors and application developers discover its rich media
processing capabilities transcend simple audio and video.

XM Audio will be available on May 15, 2001. XM Developer Kit and an associated developer program will be available late Q2. MPEG-4 support will be available in Q3. The initial XM rollout will debut on Windows, but InterTrust will provide XM for mobile communicators and set top boxes with professional services in mid Q2.

``MUSICMATCH has integrated InterTrust DRM into our jukebox for more than two years,'' said Bob Ohlweiler, Sr. Vice President of Business Development for MUSICMATCH, Inc. ``Our award-winning MUSICMATCH Jukebox caters to more than 18 million Internet music consumers and we view InterTrust's XM toolkit as a key innovation that reduces our development time and enables us to focus primarily on the consumer experience and e-commerce options.''

``As the only digital music application service provider that has agreements to provide music from all of the major labels, an improved consumer experience and ease of use by jukebox application developers is all important to us,'' said Ron Moore, Vice President of Business and Legal Affairs at RioPort. ``Our Pulse One Music Service already uses InterTrust Extensible Media technology to make the consumer experience as seamless as possible and we look forward to even greater integration providing consumers with even more benefits.''

``AAC is a high quality audio coding system that has been adopted by a variety of commercial music service providers,'' said Ramzi Haidamus, Director of Business Development at Dolby Laboratories. ``AAC is being licensed in the context of secure distribution and InterTrust's XM is welcome support for developers that wish to make their products a friendly place for commercial online music.''

``Envivio and InterTrust have been working closely on the development of commercial MPEG-4 products'' said Julien Signes, President and CTO of Envivio. ``With the XM Suite's MPEG-4 support, we look forward to a proliferation of protected MPEG-4 players that can read the standard bit streams that our server and authoring products generate and manage. The combination of our advanced authoring tools and InterTrust's flexible DRM will create a context for MPEG-4 that will surely add momentum to the wide adoption of this standard for the professional media and broadcast industries.''

InterTrust's new development suite for the player market reinforces its leadership in the DRM space, building on its customer base of recognized brands in the music, publishing and video industries.
