lobogotti's Top 50 Comedies & Honorable Mentions Reference Page

#1 Funny Farm – Okay, make fun of me now. I happen to watch this more than any other DVD I own. To me there is no funnier comedy. IMO Chevy Chase is the funniest man ever to grace the silver screen….from Fletch to National Lampoons to Caddyshack. I wish he wouldn’t have faded away. He still has it imo……I think he just may be busy living the good life. Now, seriously, if you haven’t seen this film or don’t remember it….see it again and tell me you don’t think it is that funny. This movie is comedic gold.

#2 Wedding Crashers – I know this hasn’t had much time to mature since it is so recent, but man this is a funny movie. I really thought to myself if I had to have five comedies for the rest of my life and only five, which would they be as of today……well this is one of those. I have said it before; Vince Vaughn is the funniest man in show business right now. He speaks, I laugh. What else is there? From start to finish one of the funniest movies I have ever seen.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0396269/

#3 Best In Show – Christopher Guest has an array of film achievements. He picks very carefully what he is going to do next and it works. This film made it so high on my list because it deals with animals and comedy, so it is a double threat. If you haven’t seen this run out to the store and get it….especially if you’re a dog lover.

#4 Clifford – This could easily be my favorite comedy of all time. Charles Grodin and Martin Short should have been in more movies together. Seriously, why didn’t Grodin make more comedies? His acting in this film was outstanding; he played the part so well. A lot of people haven’t seen this one, if you haven’t I beg you to give it a try.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109447/

#5 Raising Arizona – Nicholas Cage, John Goodman and Holly Hunter will have you in tears. My favorite line “Buford already knows his ABC’s, hit the deck boy” …OMG, one of the funniest scenes of all time.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093822/

#6 Better Off Dead – I want my two dollars!!! If you have seen BOD then you know exactly what I am talking about. Cusak was in a lot of 80’s comedies, this just happens to be my favorite of his.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088794/

#7 Fletch – I can’t say much, other than this is such a funny movie. So many lines that I quote from it. The airport mechanic was my favorite character in this one.
Quotes:
Willy: What the hell you need ball bearings for?
Fletch: Awww, come on guys, it's so simple. Maybe you need a refresher course?
Fletch: Hey! It's all ball bearings nowadays. Now you prepare that Fetzer valve with some 3-in-1 oil and some gauze pads. And I'm gonna need 'bout ten quarts of anti-freeze, preferably Prestone. No, no make that Quaker State.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089155/

#8 Rushmore – An underrated film that many have never seen. Bill Murray and Jason Schwartman are sensational. Wes Anderson is a different kind of director; but you have to have a taste for his humor….I happen to love it. Good film.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0128445/

#9 Meet The Parents – Who didn’t like Gaylord Focker? DeNiro was absolutely wonderful in this movie, also that he wasn't just a tough guy. The story was good and the characters were hilarious. A+ for a comedy.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0212338/

#10 National Lampoon Vacations (series) – I want to meet a person that says they don’t like these movies. With the exception of the last one made (and even it had it’s funny moments), they are just hysterical. The Griswold’s are America’s first family imo!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085995/

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097958/

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089670/

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120434/

#11 O’ Brother Where Art Thou – Who would have thought this would be so good and a rolling on the floor kind of comedy. My wife and I can’t get enough; this is one of our most watched DVD’s. The Coens (directors) have three movies in my top 20…The Big Lebowski at #20, O’ Brother at #11 and tomorrow you will see where the other is ranked.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0190590/

#12 A Christmas Story – I wanted to put this as number one, but I didn’t want my love of Christmas to influence my great comedies. No denying this will be THE Christmas movies for the ages…better than any other I could ever think of. Yes, yes, even It’s A Wonderful Life or Mircale on 34th St.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085334/

#13 Friday (series *but mostly the first) The first Friday is truly one of the funniest modern day comedies ever. It has a cult following and so many lines are quoted in newer movies just from Chris Tuckers lines alone. OMG, I am laughing just typing this.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080487/

#14 Caddyshack – All star comedic cast. My favorite line in the movie goes as such….”I want a Hamburger, I want a Cheeseburger, I want a Hot Dog, I want aa….YOU”LL GET NOTHING AND LIKE IT!!! LMAO…….the best.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080487/

#15 Young Frankenstein – Gene Wilder, again I say the man was one of the best at making you laugh. Terri wasn’t bad to look at either. This and Blazing saddles were Brooks best works for comedy…as far as I have ever seen.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072431/

#16 Dumb & Dumber – Harry & Lloyd are just the perfect pair of idiots and that is what makes this film. My friends and I spit lines back and fourth from this movie……over and over. It probably should get an even higher ranking, but there is tough competition.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109686/

#17 Airplane – What do I have to say about this film? You all know it is genius and I love every minute. When the lady is translating…OMG, too funny. Shirley you agree?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080339/

#18 The Wedding Singer – Interestingly enough this is my only Sandler movie in the top 20…and I love his comedies. I really like this one though, especially the scene where he is singing his corrupted love ballads…LOL.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120888/

#19 Old School – Yes Old School inched its way into the top ten. Too many things in the movie that I can relate too; just loads of fun. Vaughn again shows why he is the funniest man in show business today…imo.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0302886/

#20 The Big Lebowski – The Dude! From peeing on rugs to White Russians throughout the whole movie, it never gets old. Goodman is hilarious, especially when he is talking religion. A must see.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118715/

#21 Snatch – I wanted this to make my top 20, but there are so many great choices. I find that this is that much more funny if you turn on the subtitles. This may not supposed to have been a comedy as much, but it is guaranteed laughter throughout the whole movie.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0208092/

#22 Arthur – Dudley Moore is just sensational as the spoiled, rich, drunken playboy. The soon to be father in law and the butler had me in tears.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082031/

#23 Napoleon Dynamite – Yes that is right, Napoleon makes it this far. Hey, when you can make a movie with no cursing or barely any reference to sex and still make me fall over from laughing….you have yourself a winner. Instant comedic classic!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0374900/

#24 Blazing Saddles – Excuse me while I whip this out! Mel Brooks finest comedic film imo…and he has a few. Wilder was something else, it is hard to think of him in a bad film of the top of my head.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071230/

#25 American Pie (series *first three) – Three wasn’t the best, but the apple pie scene from the first is classic. Throw in a hot co-ed class and Stifler to boot, you have the making of a great comedy.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0163651/

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0252866/

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0328828/

#26 Office Space – I suppose this movie is only this funny if you work in an office setting, or have worked in one. Maybe you know somebody who does, bottom line is we can relate….hilarious film.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0151804/

#27 The Jerk – Die Milkface! So many lines you can quote in this one. This was a movie that really made Steve Martin imo,…good laughs and the female lead was gorgeous.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079367/

#28 Shrek (series) – I think the second one was funnier than the first, but they were both outstanding. Look for the third in theaters next spring!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0126029/

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0298148/

#29 Drop Dead Gorgeous – A film that not a lot of people have heard about. If you haven’t seen this and want to laugh until you pee your pants…rent it. About a teenage beauty pageant in a small town in Minnesota. Everything that can go wrong does and I swear you will be laughing all the while.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0157503/

#30 Coming To America – Eddie Murphy does it all in this one. I love the speech the father gives him when he says ‘with some hard work you could have a house like this some day too’…LOL. Great film.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094898/

#31 There’s Something About Mary – I saw this in the theater about three times. It was and is that good of a comedy. If you haven’t seen it, you need to do that soon.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0129387/

#32 Planes, Trains & Automobiles – Because I’ve been with Dale Griffifth may be one of the most quoted lines from me ever!!!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093748/

#33 Kingpin – The Farrelly brothers have a few hits in my top 50, and if you have seen this one you know why it is here. Rolling on the floor laugh scenes in this one.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116778/

#34 What About Bob – I can’t get enough of this one. Whenever I am feeling down it is very easy to just pop ole Bob in and LMAO at Dreyfuss.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103241/

#35 Waiting for Guffman – Christopher Guest is a comic genius. I watch this film and I cry, he just knows what he is doing. No stopping him, because “For Your Consideration” comes out later this year and it is guaranteed to sleigh audiences.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118111/

#36 Election – An underrated hit, Reece Witherspoon is absolutely hysterical. Matthew Broderick shows you he still has the funny in this high school comedy.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0126886/

#37 Sideways – Jack and Miles just did it for me. I even took the Sideways tour when I was in California earlier this year, that is how much I loved this movie.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0375063/

#38 Rush Hour (series) – It’s always duos, and these two just plain work together. I am looking forward to the third coming next summer. Chris Tucker needs to make more movies.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120812/

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0266915/

#39 Dirty Rotten Scoundrels – Steve Martin and Michael Caine should have made more movies together. They were superb in this one about two con men competing for a town.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095031/

#40 Trading Places – Eddie Murphy and Dan Akroyd will have you on your hands and knees. Jamie Lee really shows you why so many men still talk about her in this film.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086465/

#41 Swingers - Vince Vaughn really hit a homerun and impressed me with this one. To me he is the funniest guy in the movies right now. And he has a couple of other movies in my top 50.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117802/

#42 Fast Times at Ridgemont High - OMG, who would think that Sean Penn would have had a comedic character whom I would quote through the rest of my dying days. I love everything about this comedy.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083929/

#43 Scary Movie - The sequels do this no justice (except #2). A very funny spoof on some great scary movies. The Wayans at their comedic best.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0175142/

#44 Ghostbusters - Don't know if any of you remember how funny this was when it came out...but I sure do. Bill Murray could have his own top 50 list.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087332/

#45 The Princess Bride - I almost consider this a romance, but Billy Crystal's character won't let me do that. I absolutely love this movie, it always puts a smile on my face.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093779/

Here's looking at you Susie!

#46 Annie Hall - The scene with the lobsters makes me laugh so hard. Great film and probably deserved a better ranking.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075686/

#47 Tommy Boy - One of those films I didn't want to love, but I just can't help it. Another one of his that won't make my top 50, but was too funny is Almost Heroes.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114694/

#48 Monty Python and the Holy Grail - I just saw this recently; I must say very good for it's time.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071853/

#49 Finding Nemo - Though I love Pixar, this will probably be my only animated comedy (maybe two exceptions). Out of all the Pixars, this one got me most, bought it the second it came out and saw it twice at the theater. I don't think they will make an equally funnier animated comedy until Shrek the Third comes out (Shrek 2 was funnier, but not by much).

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0266543/

#50 Drop Dead Fred - I remember how much I used to watch this over and over. Gutbusting laughs, and I loved it.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101775/

To those that like a good laugh, definitely worth it.

Here is a list of 25 honorable mentions (so none of these are in my top 10) that didn't make the cut. These would fall somewhere after the top 50, not necessarily in order. There are others as well, I will post more honorable comedies tomorrow, after my final top 10.
