OK...Lesson 2:

First, you will have to understand how the arms function in the swing. They do not wrap around your body, ...they only go up and down. To illustrate this, stand as if you were addressing the ball. Now, without turning your body, lift the club straight out in front of you. That's right... straight up.....over your right shoulder. Now lower the club straight back down behind the ball striking the ground will the HEEL of the club. Then lift the club straight up over your left shoulder.

If you comprehend this correctly, understand that if you were going to hit the ball, you would pick the club straight up, and then swing down at the ball striking the ball with the HEEL of the club, driving it straight down into the ground and then lift the club straight up over your left shoulder.

Remember, we are just isolating the arms function now. This movement will become more understandable as we get into Lesson 3.

You may also notice that the wrists hinge up and down only....they do not bend to the left or the right. I use the illustration of a hitch hiker moving his thumb up and down...this action is paramount as in this up and down action, you can always maintain the club head in a square position throughout the swing....

Now, let's understand how the body works in the swing.
Stand at address, raise the club straight out in front of you to waist high. If you have done this correctly, the TOE of the club will be pointing straight up to the sky. From this position turn 90 degrees to the right WITHOUT bending your wrists. Now turn back 180 degrees to the left WITHOUT bending your wrists...that's how the body works in the swing...simple enough, right?

OK, let's combine the arms and the body....

You will recall that when you swung the club with just the arms, when the club reached the waist high point the TOE was pointing to the sky. You will also recall that when you turned your body to the right that the TOE was also pointing to the sky when held at the waist high position. So it is your goal to make the TOE of the club point to the sky by the time it reaches waist high in your backswing. You will also note that the wrists have not bent to the left or right if you do this correctly. On the Forward swing after striking the ball you will also have the TOE of the club pointing to the sky by the time it reaches waist high again. Simple enough????

OK, I'll let you ponder these movements before going to Lesson 3.
