OK....Lesson 3: The "holy grail"...the "secret" ..the "magic"....whatever you want to call it.....
This is where a leap of faith is required....if you can get this part, you will have what very few acquire....
You will recall in Lesson 2 the arm swing.....where you just picked the club straight up over your right shoulder and then made a descending blow to the ball striking it with the HEEL of the club as if you were going to drive the ball straight down into the ground.
We will take that image and transfer it to the full swing...
it is best that you try this first with a shorter club, say a 9 iron, rather than a driver, because the increased swing speed you generate will be so new to you that if you use a longer shafted club, you may try to compensate by bending your wrists to the right and left just to keep up.....start with a 9 iron and work up through the clubs until you finally reach the driver with confidence.
ok here it is....take the club back as we have discussed....now on the downswing, do not, I repeat, do not try to hit the ball with the face of the club.... rather try to hit it with the HEEL of the club....that's right the HEEL, the back of the hosel, just like we did in Lesson 2....remember now that your body is doing the job of squaring the club face....trust in the fact that your turn will square it up....the more you try to hit it with the HEEl, the faster your club head speed will be as your body will take on more and more of moving the club through the swing....
Trust it and swing with complete abandon regarding the hands...just let the hands hinge up and down naturally in the swing...
If you can trust this move you will turn the job of swinging the club with the arm muscles over to the legs, torso and shoulders....that's where the power really is....
