Insurance Break For Child Day-Care Businesses

Andrew Smyth August 11, 2006
Know More: ATWEC Technologies, Consumers, NSI, West Bend Mutual Insurance Company, childcare safety transportation products, insurancejournal.com
While the specifics of this deal were not released it could prove worthwhile to child day-care owners. ATWEC Technologies, a manufacturer of pre-school and daycare safety products as it relates to the transportation industry, stated in a press release they have joined with NSI, a division of West Bend Mutual Insurance Company, to offer its KiddieSystem™ product line to West Bend Mutual policyholders at a discounted rate.

In addition West Bend Mutual will also “encourage its policyholders to install KiddieVoice™ by offering a premium discount to those who do.” KiddieVoice™ works in the following way:

The KiddieVoice® automatic alerting system has been developed to guard against a very real and scary possibility - the accidental abandonment of a child on a school/daycare vehicle.

Automatically armed each time the ignition switch is turned ON, the Kiddie Voice® alerting system is automatically activated whenever the ignition key is turned OFF. Then an electronic oral warning message begins prompting the driver to commence checking the vehicle for passengers.
Once the KiddieVoice® alerting message system has been activated, it can only be deactivated by the driver’s walking to the rear interior of the vehicle and manually depressing the cancellation button.
During this walk to the rear of the vehicle, the driver is prompted to check each seat for occupants. A secondary visual inspection is automatically accomplished as the driver returns to the front of the vehicle to exit.

Chel Buttchen, NSI supervisor of Childcare and Personal Appearance Programs, added, “in addition to a discount in the purchase price of KiddieVoice™, NSI would provide an auto liability premium credit to those policyholders that offer proof of installation on all vehicles used for transporting children.”

Aside from the financial benefits of participating in this promotion it seems to make sense that all school buses should have this system in place. I for one am amazed school buses still do not have seat belts despite the assumed precautions and safety taken by the driver.
