nice
gently flowing
mellow

as I exited the pub
a man picked a butt
off the sidewalk
past chops
on the way
up the road
i turned
and saw him
as he drooped
reached my pack
and said, "hey"
his ragged
hunched shoulders
stooped back
to me turned
tired hurting eyes
cast downcast
dirty on the outside
who knows what within
"want a cigarette?"
broken fingernails
took one and turned away
I continued on the sidewalk
mixed feelings
thinking I should
have given him two ..
