Here is kind of a summary of what Angel Tree is about.

Prison Fellowship Reaches Out to More Than a Half-Million Kids Through Year-Round Angel Tree® Program

WASHINGTON, D.C., Jan. 26, 2004—An estimated 2 million children across the United States know what it’s like to have a parent behind bars. By every measure, prisoners’ children are the most severely at-risk children and youth in America. Studies show that children of prisoners are five times more likely to end up in prison themselves (U.S. News & World Report, April 2002). Through Prison Fellowship’s Angel Tree®, thousands of compassionate volunteers across the U.S. are working to break the cycle of crime and let children of the incarcerated know they are not forgotten.

In 2003, more than 525,000 children received Christmas gifts on behalf of their incarcerated parent through Prison Fellowship’s Angel Tree®. Since the program’s inception, more than 6.3 million children of prisoners have received some 12.6 million Angel Tree gifts nationwide.

By brightening Christmas for the child of a prisoner, Prison Fellowship’s Angel Tree® program helps children begin to heal the pain of being separated from their mom or dad, and offers these families an important connection with a community that can offer support and love during a time of isolation.

The hope doesn’t end at Christmas. Through the support of local churches and volunteers, Prison Fellowship’s Angel Tree® works year-round, helping kids get school supplies, providing mentoring, and providing kids with summer camp opportunities.

“Prison Fellowship’s Angel Tree® programs offer life-changing opportunities for children of prisoners across the country not only at Christmas, but all year,” said Mark Earley, president of Prison Fellowship. “We are gearing up for the 2004 summer season, and hope every child will have the opportunity to experience a weekend at camp.”

Prison Fellowship’s Angel Tree®, a year-round program that provides Christmas care, camping programs, and mentoring to the children of prisoners, represents the only nationwide effort, religious or secular, to reach out to children whose fathers or mothers are behind bars. Angel Tree® is a program of Prison Fellowship, the world’s largest prison outreach organization. For information on how to participate in 2004, visit www.angeltree.org or call 1-800-55-ANGEL.
