98-102 mm² Winchester with 1MB L2?

The difference between 90nm Opteron (114mm²) and the Winchester core (98-102mm²) seems to be around 12-16 mm².

1MB L2 on 90nm Opteron is 48mm²
(photo is shown in Bill Siegle's presentation, Analyst Day '03)

512kB L2 would be 24mm² less - much more than the difference between Winchester and Opteron cores

What else could make a difference of 12-16 mm²?
Well, the parts of one of the DDR interfaces and 2 HT links, which reside on the top and bottom borders (on the long sides) take about 14 mm² and the full height left and right borders about 10 mm².

Taking into account the unused spaces between all these areas, it would be possible to strip off 2 HT links + 1 DDR interface for a size reduction of at least 12 mm². In the best case they achieved 12 mm² by just removing 2 HT links and rearranging everything a bit.

So we'd have one core for dual channel S939 CPUs with 512kB (1/2 disabled) or 1MB L2 (FX).
