Susanna Hoffs, Debbi Peterson, Vicki Peterson and Michael Steele all agree that the return of The Bangles was a natural evolution. They came back together for the purest of motives-simply because they enjoy making music together. They also all agree that they needed a break from the group to do whatever it was they chose to do. Their time away from each other was well spent. The experiences they had working with other musicians and exploring other areas of life-including parenting for two of the members-have given The Bangles' new musical opportunities that might have been missed, had they continued the album/tour, album/tour agenda that kept them at the top of the charts and on sold-out world tours during the 1980s.

Bonds run deep when you've been through what The Bangles have gone through together. During their first eight years as a band, The Bangles rose from Los Angeles' cultish "Paisley Underground" scene to achieve platinum-level success, bringing an organic pop sensibility back to '80s airwaves while serving as a role model for a generation of female rockers. After an EP, The Bangles made their album debut with the 1984 album, All Over The Place, which contained the college radio hits "Hero Takes A Fall" and "Going Down to Liverpool." But it was their second album, Different Light, that catapulted them to stardom on the strength of four hits: the Prince-penned "Manic Monday," Jules Shear's "If She Knew What She Wants," "Walking Down Your Street" and "Walk Like An Egyptian." With the last one, they became the first all female band to have a #1 record for four weeks straight and the album went quadruple platinum. Their third album, Everything, contained the hits "In Your Room" and "Be With You," plus another #1 hit, "Eternal Flame," which became the fifth biggest selling hit of 1989. A Greatest Hits collection released the following year also went platinum.

Since The Bangles' version of the Simon and Garfunkel hit, "Hazy Shade of Winter" became one of their biggest hits, topping the charts when it appeared on the soundtrack for Less Than Zero in 1987, it made sense that a soundtrack would signal their return. They had already been writing together again for some time in 1999, when they recorded "Get the Girl" for Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. Shortly after that, The Bangles were invited to perform at a tribute to Beatles producer George Martin at the Hollywood Bowl. Since their love of The Beatles music was one thing that brought The Bangles together in the first place, they immediately accepted the invitation. Martin personally chose the songs for them to perform.

All four members continued recording and performing during the hiatus. Susanna Hoffs (vocals/guitar) began work on a solo record. In 1991, she released the ironically titled When You're A Boy, which spawned the hit "My Side Of The Bed" and spent the summer opening shows for Don Henley. Her second album, a self-titled recording released in 1996, featured collaborations with The Go-Go's Charlotte Caffey, Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse, Jellyfish, Mick Fleetwood and Jim Keltner. Hoffs' touring included dates on Sarah Mc Lachlan's first Lilith Fair. She also had songs on the soundtracks for Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery and the gold-selling Now and Then. Hoffs also married film director Jay Roach in 1993 and started a family. Now 41, Hoffs is the mother of two children.

Debbi Peterson (vocals/drums) also started a family. She married Steve Botting in 1989 and now has a three year old son. Her first gig when The Bangles went on hiatus was a tribute concert to Roy Orbison where she sang "Pretty Woman" with k.d. lang, Bonnie Raitt and Emmylou Harris among others. She then was invited to be a guest drummer with Spinal Tap at a show in Los Angeles. Peterson also collaborated on songwriting with Gina Schock from the Go-Gos. She later co-founded the band Kindred Spirit with Siobhan Maher. They opened up for Joan Armatrading on a UK tour and released a self-titled debut album.

Peterson's sister, Vicki (vocals/lead guitar) plans to juggle her schedule to work with both The Bangles and the Continental Drifters, a New Orleans based band she joined in 1991. Their latest album, "Vermillion," released in the US last year, was included in several year-end "Best Of" lists and was voted Album of the Year by Offbeat Magazine. The Drifters were also voted "Roots Rock Band of the Year" in their hometown and have done sold-out tours of America and Europe, where the record has was released in 1998. Peterson recently recorded a version of the Monkees' "Last Train to Clarksville" to be included on Virgin Record's "I-10 Chronicles, Vol. 2" and one of their songs written by Peterson, "Watermark," was featured in an episode of "Party of Five." Peterson, who filled in for Charlotte Caffey during the 1994 Go-Go's reunion tour, also performs with Susan Cowsill as the Psycho Sisters. They have a new record due out early next year. Her studio work over the past ten years has included providing harmonies for artists such as John Doe, Mike Watt, Belinda Carlisle, Jolene, Jules Shear, Kevin Salem, Steve Wynn, Kate Jacobs and Giant Sand.

Michael Steele (vocals, bass) spent her time away from the Bangles on a journey of personal discovery. She relocated to the rugged coast of Northern California, settling into a 100-year-old farmhouse where she spent her time writing, painting and recording.

One reason The Bangles are enjoying working together again is that they are doing so without pressure. The subject of a VH1 "Behind the Music," which aired July 30, 2000, they spent August in the studio recording demos of some of the new songs they've written. Their first shows in more than a decade are scheduled for September, when they will play Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto and New York.
