"Hot Smoke" (2000) - WOW! 30 years after their sole album issued as The Bubble Puppy, we are presented with this unexpected treasure from guitarist Rod Prince and his record company, "Actual Artists". This newly-released CD contains the authentic mixes of their two singles, "Hot Smoke and Sassafras" and "Lonely", along with four previously unreleased tunes recorded in 1969 and nearly 14 minutes of the band's signature jam recorded live at their 1984 reunion debut performance. At just under 40 minutes, the length of the CD is a little short; but (as expected) the music really cooks...if you're already familiar with the band, you know what I mean. The true mix of "Hot Smoke and Sassafras" is a little heavy on the bass end, but still sounds great after all these years...a better rendition of late-1960s psychedelic-rock you'll never hear. "Lonely" should have been a big follow-up hit for them, and it's a nice inclusion here. The real treats on "Hot Smoke" are the four previously unreleased songs ("Grand Illusion", "Methedrine Blues", "Hard Lives", and "Bound To Pain")...No throwaways here. For fans of The Bubble Puppy, you simply must own this CD (it can be ordered directly from the official Bubble Puppy website). Incredible guitar work, inspired bass playing and solid drumming...these guys had all the right chops, and they never got the recognition they deserved. Let's hope there's more where this came from.
