1946-1969

Dec 25 1946: James William Buffett was born in Pascagoula, Mississippi (Jackson County Memorial Hospital) son of James Delaney Buffett Jr and Mary Loriane (Peets)

1950's-1960's: Jimmy Buffett was raised in Mobile Alabama, his father worked in a shipyard. Jimmy attended catholic school (St Ignatius grade school and then McGill Institute an all-boys school)

Sept 1964 to May 1965: Jimmy attends Auburn University. He pledged with the Sigma Pi faternity, Alpha-Delta chapter. It was there that Jimmy learned how to play guitar from another Sigma Pi pledge. He hoped playing guitar would help him overcome his shyness and help to meet girls. Unfortunately, the guitar playing overtook studying and he only lasted a year at Auburn.

1965: Attends Pearl River Community College in Poplarville, Mississippi

1966: Transfers to the University of Southern Mississippi.

1967: Jimmy gets initiated into the Kappa Sigma fraternity, Epsilon-Nu Chapter. He formed a small band and played social occasions with members of the fraternity, including Rick Bennett and Doug Duncan.

1969: Earns a Bachelor of Science degree in history and journalism from the University of Southern Mississippi.

1969: Jimmy moves to the New Orleans French Quarter and plays clubs on Bourbon Street with the cover band Upstairs Alliance.

1969: Jimmy marries his first wife Margie Washichek

The 1970's

1970: JB sings with the Now Generation and appears on two albums, Come Together and Hits are our Business

1970: Jimmy moves to Nashville, Tennessee hoping to find success as a country singer.

1970: JB works as a journalist for Billboard magazine in Nashville

1970: Signs with Barnaby Records and releases his first album, Down to Earth

1971: JB went broke and seperated from his first wife Margie. The divorce was final within a year.

1971: Jimmy finishs recording his second album High Cumberland Jubilee. The album is not released because Barnaby Records misplaces the master tape.

Nov 1971: JB meets up with his friend Jerry Jeff Walker in Miami FL. They got in Walker's old Packard and drove to Key West.

1972?: Jimmy first meets Jane Slagsvol (future wife) at a phonebooth outside of the Chart Room bar in Key West

1973: JB signs with ABC - Dunhill Records which is later absorbed by MCA

1973: A White Sport Coat & A Pink Crustacean is releasesed. It contains the song Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw which was written by Jimmy using the alias Marvin Gardens. It's the first album that Greg "Fingers" Taylor and Micheal Utley appeared on.

1974: Living & Dying In 3/4 Time is released and the song Come Monday breaks the Top 30 pop charts.

1974: JB does the soundtrack for movie Rancho Deluxe and has a role in the film.

1975: A1A is released containing many refernces to Key West. It includes the song A Pirate.Looks at Forty that Jimmy wrote about his buddy Phillip Clark a bartender at the Chart Room

1975: The Coral Reefer Band hits the road with Jimmy for their first tour during the summer.

1976: JB and the CRB record their first album together, Havana Daydreamin'

1976: Jimmy buys a boat, The Euphoria, and sails away to the Carribean Islands with Jane

1976: High Cumberland Jubilee is finally released after the master tapes are found.

1976: Jimmy campaigns for Jimmy Carter.

1977: Jimmy's interview with High Times magazine

1977: Changes In Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes becomes Buffett's first platinum album. He also scored his only top ten single with Margaritaville

1977?: Jimmy buys a house in Aspen

1977: Jimmy buys a bigger boat, Euphoria II, and sails around the Carribean

Aug 27 1977: Jimmy marries Jane Slagsvol.

1977: JB and the CRB perform Livingston Saturday Light in the film FM.

1978: Son Of A Son Of A Sailor is released. The single Cheeseburger in Paradise breaks into the top 40.

1978: The double live album You Had To Be There is released.

1979: Jimmy is detained by authorites in St Barts for allegedly smuggling marijuana

1979: MCA purchases ABC Records

Jun 1, 1979: Jimmy and Jane Buffett's first daughter Savannah Jane is born

1979: Volcano is released under the MCA label. Fins is released as a single and makes the top 40 chart.

1979: Before the Salt is released containing both Down to Earth and High Cumberland Jubilee

1979: JB sings backing vocals on the song The Greeks Don't Want no Freeks on the Eagle's Long Run

1979: Jimmy sells his boat Euphoria II and buys another a smaller one Savannah Jane named after his daughter

The 1980's

1980: The song Hello Texas recorded by Jimmy Buffett appears on the Urban Cowboy soundtrack

1980: JB's song Survive is used in the movie Coast to Coast (staring Robert Blake and Dyan Cannon)

1980: Jimmy is appointed chairman of Florida's Save the Manatee Commission by Gov Robert Graham.

1986?: JB buys a hotel (Autour du Rocher ) on St Barts in the Caribbean that is later destroyed by a fire

1981: Coconut Telegraph is released

1981: JB co-writes the song Sugar Trade which appears on the James Taylor album Dad Loves His Work

1982: Jimmy appeared on the soap All My Children

1982: JB and the CRB record the song I Don't Know (Spicoli's Theme) for Fast Times at Ridgemont High

1982: Somewhere Over China is released

1983?: Jimmy and Jane are separted

1983: One Particular Harbour is released

1984: Riddles In The Sand is released

1985: JB open's the first Margaritaville store in Key West selling a line of Caribbean soul t-shirts.

1985: The Coconut Telegraph fan newsletter debuts

1985: Live by the Bay, with JB and the CRB is the first video released for sale

1985: Timothy B. Schmit comes up with the term "Parrot Heads" to describe fans of Buffett's music

1985: JB's song Ragtop Day is used in the movie The Slugger's Wife

1985: Last Mango In Paris is released

1985: JB's song Turning Around is used in the movie Summer Rental

1985: His greatest hits compilation Songs You Know By Heart is released and became and remains his best selling album.

1985: Jimmy has a cameo role in the movie Repo Man.

1986: Jimmy sings La Vie Dansante for the special Doctor Ducks Super Secret All Purpose Sauce

1986?: Jimmy buy's his first seaplane, Lady of the Waters, and flys all over the Caribbean.

1986: Floridays is released

1987: The first Margaritaville Cafe opens on Duval St in Key West

1987: The song Take it Back is released as a single - written by JB for the Americas Cup challenge in Australia.

1988: Releases the album Hot Water which includes guest appearances by favorites James Taylor, Steve Winwood, the Neville Brothers, and Rita Coolidge.

1988: The Jolly Mon written by Jimmy Buffett and his daughter Savannah Jane is released.

1988: Jimmy does the song Christmas in the Caribbean for Tennessee Christmas

1989: Jimmy's first novel: Tales from Margaritaville : Fictional Facts and Factual Fictions is released

1989: Jimmy and Bill Murray invest in the Ft Myers Miracles minor league baseball team

1990: A second live album Feeding Frenzy is released, recorded in Atlanta and Cincinatti.

1990: JB does the song Don't Bug Me for the Arachnophobia soundtrack

1990: Jimmy does backing vocals on Zachary Richard's Women in the Room

1991?: Jimmy and Jane reconcile and move back to Nashville

1991: A second childrens book by Jimmy Buffett and his daughter Savannah Jane called Trouble Dolls is published.

April 1, 1992: Jimmy and Jane Buffett's second daughter Sarah Delaney is born

1992: Jimmy's second novel Where Is Joe Merchant? is released and makes it to #1 on the NY Times fiction bestseller's list

1992: Boats Beaches Bars & Ballads is released and becomes one of the best selling box sets ever for MCA.

1992: Jimmy starts his own record label in Nashville with the help of his ex-wife's husband Bob Mercer

1992: JB does some vocals and produces Evangeline's self titled album under the Margaritaville Records label

Nov 16, 1995: Jimmy buys a new plane: 1954 Grumman Albatross Seaplane HU-16 N928J, The Hemispher Dancer, 60ft long with an 80ft wingspan.

January 16, 1996: Jimmy's sea plane "the Flying Boat" is shot at by the Jamaica police who mistaked him for a drug smuggler. U2's Bono was in the plane with him at the time. Jimmy wrote a song about the incident, Jamaica Mistaica.that appears on the album Banana Wind that is released.

1996: Jimmy is the executive producer for the soundtrack to the movie Phenomenon

1996: Jimmy has a part as a cop in the audio play Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas

1996: A Christmas Album titled Christmas Island is released by JB and the CRB.

April 1997: The musical Don't Stop the Carnival opens and has a sucessful six week run at the Coconut Grove playhouse in Miami

1997: Jimmy's mother suddenly has a stroke.

Aug 19, 1997: JB sings at President Clinton's 51st birthday party.

1997: Jimmy does the Purple People Eater song with Iko-Iko for the movie Contact

1997: Jimmy does the song Trouble on the Horizon for MOM II

Sept 1997: JB performs at the Montserrat benefit concert at Royal Albert Hall in England. He did a special version of Volcano and joined in with artists including Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Phil Collins, and Sting on the encore Hey Jude.

Oct 1997: Universal Pictures purchases the film rights for "Where is Joe Merchant?"

Jan 13, 1998: Re-release of Rancho Deluxe CD by MGM/Rycodisc

Feb 1998: Caribbean Amphibian is released on the Elmopalooza CD/video that JB did with Kermit.

1998: C. F. Martin & Co. honors Jimmy Buffett with a signature edition guitar. Only 424 were made originally going for $3650.00

1998: Jimmy goes to Cuba to cover the Papal visit for Rolling Stone Magazine

1998: JB has the role of a journalist in the HBO Mini-series From the Earth to the Moon
