Rock 'n' Roll Artists A-Z...Re: Cactus

http://members.aol.com/edtheedge/cactus.htm

Cactus was a relatively short lived band. The original lineup was together only 3 short years and produced only three albums, Cactus, OneWay...Or Another and Retrictions. But that doesn't mean that their music has been forgotten, nor was it mediocre! The original members came from very popular bands at the time. Tim Bogert (bass) and Carmine Appice (drums) both came from The Vanilla Fudge. Jim McCarty (guitar) came from Mitch Ryder's Detroit Wheel. And last but not least ,Rusty Day (vocals) was with Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes. So I guess you could say that this was sort of an early 70's supergroup! Their brand of hard driving boogie based blues rock has never been duplicated with any proficiency.

While Cactus never obtained the level of success that was hoped for. They have maintained a broad-based group of hard core fans. The recent release of the Cactology CD by Rhino records is proof of this. Over the past 25 years fans have put out mucho bucks to obtain quality copies of their albums. I myself have purchased at least 5 of the first album and three of One Way...Or Another and Restrictions. Their first three CD's are available as imports and demand top dollar.

Various musicians, including guitarists Steve Dansby and Ron Sanders, bassists John Sauter (formerly with Ted Nugent) and Mondo Thomas, and drummers Gary Moffatt (formerly with Pat Travers) and Frankie Robbins.
Rusty Day forms Uncle Acid & The Permanent Damage Band.

Compilations:

"Cactology: The Cactus Collection" (1996) - Since almost all of the Cactus albums are not currently available on CD, this is all we have...and what a great selection of music it is! This anthology concentrates on the first three albums, which contain the best of their material. The music is high energy and still sounds fresh today. Virtuoso musicianship all-around with INCREDIBLE guitar work from Jim McCarty. Hard-rock/boogie/blues just doesn't get any better than this. Highly recommended.

Tim Bogert solo:

"Progressions" (1981)
"Master's Brew"

Carmine Appice solo:

"Guitar Zeus" (1996)
"Channel Mind Radio (Guitar Zeus II)" (1997)
