The hit "Tequila" will always be associated with the Champs, the combo from Los Angeles who made this instrumental smash hit in 1958.
The original line-up consisted of sessions musicians, with Dave Burgess on rhythm guitar, Buddy Bruce on lead guitar, Cliff Hils on bass, Gene Alden on drums and Danny Flores, later known as Chuck Rio, on saxophone.
Shortly after the huge success of "Tequila", Bruce and Hils were replaced by Dale Norris and Joe Burnes. Flores and Alden also left the group eight months later, and were replaced by Jimmy Seals and Dash Crofts. The line-up of The Champs changed many times in the period up to 1962. One famous member was Glenn Campbell, who played guitar for them in 1960.
Jimmy Seals and Dash Crofts left the Champs in 1965 and continued in The Dawnbreakers and as pop duo with hits in the Seventies.
