Peter Chernin supports Kerry

Do you remember 1984? I do. I was young, but I remember it as a weird time in America. Iran-Contra and leg-warmers, right?

Peter Chernin sat on the panel during an economic summit in support of John Kerry yesterday in Davenport, Iowa. Just blocks from a rally for Bush, Chernin spoke openly about his support for Kerry and his Vice-Presidential running mate, Sen. John Edwards.

Why is this a big deal? After all, didn’t Leonardo DiCaprio come out in support of Kerry as well? Who is Peter Chernin?

Peter Chernin is the President and CEO of News Corporation, the parent company of FOX NEWS. If you still are asking why this is a big deal, well then please read on. (Well, actually, please read on anyway even if you know where I’m going with this.)

FOX NEWS CHANNEL, the right-leaning (to be extremely “conservative”) cable “news” outlet, does not like this. Chernin represents them. And they don’t want any association with John Kerry, other than to bash him. How do I know this? Do I have a hacker’s ability to somehow get my hands on Rupert Murdoch’s daily planner? No.

I know this because I watch FOX NEWS.

That’s it. That’s as simple as it gets. And what I see infuriates me—not only as a Kerry supporter (That’s right, I like John Kerry—I said it—shocked?), but also as someone who studied Journalism for four years and still have some (albeit not much) faith in America’s media.

FOX NEWS tries to defend themselves every so often by saying that they are ‘fair and balanced,’ trying a vein attempt at real journalism. In fact, I even heard Bill O’Reilly make the following statement on his show:

“I am not in the Bush tent; I don’t know who is getting my vote.”

Anyone who really pays attention to what FOX NEWS CHANNEL does on a daily basis knows where it stands. The underground (but growing rapidly in terms of popularity) documentary by Robert Greenwald, “Outfoxed,” examines exactly what I am talking about—the fact that FOX NEWS CHANNEL is nothing more than a 24-hour Bush campaign video.

Which brings us back to Chernin. A typical Bush supporter might say that I am contradicting myself when I say that FOX NEWS CHANNEL is in bed with the Bush administration while at the same time saying that one of the higher-ups is an outright Kerry supporter.

I’m not. If I was, why would Brit Hume (one of the countless milktoast pundits on FNC) call Chernin’s appearance yesterday a “surprise endorsement”?

The fact that he said that solidifies my argument. The fact that one man’s political views are NEWS is even that more ridiculous. But that’s the world we live in.

Thanks to smart people and movies like “Fahrenheit 9/11” and “Outfoxed,” it is almost becoming accepted and mainstream that FNC’s views are pro-Bush.

But is that a good thing or a bad thing? One the one hand, the more people that realize it may begin to put the Kool-Aid down, reconsider their devotion to FNC and get their news elsewhere (because, believe me, there are PLENTY of people out there who lap up that ‘fair and balanced’ crap like warm milk).

But on the other hand, the fact that it is becoming more mainstream and more widely known just validates the notion that people accept it. We should not accept such bias from our media outlets. They outline our entire existence if we accept it. They tell us what to do, what to think, etc. in so many subliminal (or not-so subliminal) ways. And it is a blatant attack on our right to free speech and to a freethinking democracy.

Now, you might be saying, how does a 24-hour media outlet INHIBIT free speech? Who cares? Doesn’t that make me a smarter and better-informed citizen if I know that what I am watching is biased in a certain way?

The answer to the last two questions is no. And the reason that you should care and the reason that you won’t become smarter is that they will get you hooked. All of a sudden, you will believe everything they say. And, gradually, our ability to think as a society will vanish, leaving only a 1984-ish existence, in which the government takes control, control of the media, control of the minds. Once you control the media, you control the masses.

And FNC and the Bush administration are trying to turn back the clocks 20 years. But the real sad part is that we are letting them.

And finally, I know what you are saying: You are a hypocrite. You are telling us to avoid putting biases in the media while this whole article was full of bias. Yes. You’re right. But I can only dream of reaching as many people as the conservative mainstream media. And once you are hooked on the right side of the fence (which, I guess would be the left side), you won’t live in 1984 anymore.

So I say good choice to Peter Chernin, the man. As for Peter Chernin, the CEO, let’s fast-forward about 20 years, please.
