A review of Carole King's career is like taking a trip back through the history of rock and roll.

Spanning four decades, Carole King has been a major influence in rock's evolution from its earliest stages.. Carole's career stretches way back to when it all began. She was there from the beginning: the late 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and is still writing, recording, acting, and giving her all as we an environmentalist as we enter a new century.

...Tapestry sold millions in an era when albums just did not do so...

As a young teenager, Carole was inspired by Alan Freed's legendary rock and roll extravaganzas at Brooklyn's Fox and Manhattan's Paramount theater in the late 1950s. Rather than just sit back and be a passive participant in this new, high energy, rebellious phenomenon, Carole struck out on her own as a teenager to become involved in this emerging cultural force. Little did she know, that when as a 16 year old high school student, as she boarded that subway train to travel into Manhattan from her Brooklyn home to knock on publishers/record executive's doors, she was taking the first steps to forging a career that would help to change the course of rock and roll history.

In the 60s, with partner Gerry Goffin, she formed one of the most successful American songwriting partnerships of all-time. This team was instrumental in defining the "girl group" sound which still influences many of today's pop bands. In the 70s, with the release of Tapestry, Carole became a performer of her own songs and struck such a responsive chord with the American public, that the singer/songwriter genre was finally recognized as a vital commercial force, no longer just the favorites of critics or the impassioned youth.

Tapestry sold millions in an era when albums just did not do so. It was the first blockbuster album that made a mockery of demographics and led the way for other mega-selling albums like Hotel California, Rumours, and Thriller. More important than sales figures, Tapestry captured the soul of a generation like few albums had done before or since.

In the late 70s and 80s, she became one of the first performers in rock to concentrate on writing songs about the environment and personal, spiritual concerns that would later be explored by New Age followers. She also branched out to scoring films and writing songs for film & tv, such as 1986's Murphy's Romance.

While the 1990s found Carole concentrating more on her acting career as witnessed by her outstanding starring role in Broadway's Blood Brothers for a very successful six month run in 1994, when Carole returned to music as evidenced by 1992's "Now and Forever," and her 1993 Colour of Your Dreams CD, or the plethora of new compositions she had written in the closing years of the century for others to perform, it's as if she's never left.

And, as attested to by the hundreds of letters sent to this web-site since it's inception, Carole's music is continuing to reach a whole new generation of admirers throughout the world. Her 2001 release, Love Makes the World, was one of the best-selling and highly praised independent release of the year. The title track brought Carole back to heavy rotation on the nation's top A/C radio stations including New York's WLTW-FM

Famed singer-songwriter Carole King was born Carole Klein in Brooklyn, N.Y. onFebruary 9, 1942. Playing piano since the age of four, King landed her first job as a Brill Building songwriter while still in her teens, writing for others and recordingseveral little-known solo singles. Around 1960 King joined forces with fellow songwriter Gerry Goffin, whom she later married; together, they were unstoppablehit-makers, writing a string of No. 1 songs for groups such as the Shirelles,Bobby Vee, and Little Eva. King and Goffin divorced in the mid-1960s andstopped working together; King moved to L.A. to performed with the short-livedfolk-rock trio the City.

Inspired by her singer-songwriter friend James Taylor, in the late 1960s CaroleKing decided to once again try performing, recording her full-length debut, Writer,in 1970. The following year King released the critically acclaimed albumTapestry, one of the top-selling records of all time. A landmark forsinger-songwriters, Tapestry stayed on the charts for over six years, selling10 million copies in the United States alone. That same year Music was releasedand shot to No. 1, making King one of America's most popular musicians. Her next several albums reached the Top 5, setting the stage for 1976's Thoroughbred,a one-time reunion with Gerry Goffin. The following year King began co-writingwith Rick Evers, her new husband, developing an interest in environmentalismand New Age philosophies.

In the early 1980s King moved to rural Idaho and became an environmentalactivist; after the 1983 release of Speeding Time King stoppedrecording for six years, devoting her time to personal causes. She returned in 1989with City Streets, a more modern album featuring synthesizers, drummachines, and guitar work by Eric Clapton. Carole King is currently pursuingan interest in acting; her songs live on, and have recently been covered by artists ranging from Chrissy Hynde to Billy Joel.
