Rock 'n' Roll Artists A-Z...Ricky Nelson

Rick was born on May 8, 1940 in Teaneck, New Jersey. Named Eric Hilliard Nelson by his entertainer parents Ozzie and Harriet Nelson, Rick was their youngest son. Their first son, David was 3.
Like all boys his age, Rick (age 3 with his older brother Dave and Pop, Ozzie) is fascinated by toys. Ozzie was always close to his sons.

Ozzie and Harriet Eventually, Dave and Rick would join their parents on the show, that had its start on the radio. David and Rick replaced child actors that had previously been portraying the boys.
Seen weekly in the livingrooms of America, the Nelson boys were the object of many young girls' affections.

Rick's career spanned the Radio/Televison era, Rick was a pioneer in Television, TV Sitcoms, Rockabilly, Rock and Roll, Rock on Television, Music Videos, Country Rock, and the California Sound. When Rick was 16, he recorded a record and performed Fats Domino's I'm Walkin on the series, Rick became a Rock and Roll Teen Idol.

When Rick was 18... he co-starred with John Wayne and Dean Martin in his first western, Warner Bros.' Rio Bravo, directed by Howard Hawks. Rick portrayed a fast-drawing wagon-train guard 'Colorado'. He later co-starred with Jack Lemmon in The Wackiest Ship in the Army, more movies followed and can be found in the filmography section.

In April 1963, Rick married Kristin Harmon, daughter of Football Great, Tom Harmon and Model/Actress Elyse Knox. Later in the year their daughter, Tracy Kristine Nelson was born. Tracy marked the 3rd generation of Nelsons to appear on the show and is a talented actress today.

In late 1971, Rick reluctantly agreed to appear at a huge oldies show at Madison Square Garden in NYC. When he took the stage, backed by the Stone Canyon Band, and they started playing updated versions of his old hits, things went fairly well, until they moved on to play the new material. When they played "Honky Tonk Woman" the crowd was "Boo"-ing. This was an awful feeling for Rick. He penned the song "Garden Party" from this experience, mainly as a way to release the feelings the experience gave him, and the song turned into a very positive outlet and a huge hit for him. The first to reach the Top 40 charts since 1964.

On August 29, 1974, Rick's youngest son: Sam Hilliard Nelson was born. Rick and Kristin later divorced in December 1981.

On December 31, 1985, Rick Nelson, following a performance in Guntersville, Alabama (where Rick's last number was Buddy Holly's 'Rave On'), accompanied by his fiancee, Helen Blair, and five members of The Stone Canyon Band were on their way to the next venue in Dallas. The plane, had been having problems and after take-off, the pilot detected smoke seeping into the cockpit. He attempted an emergency landing on a highway and all seemed well when the plane landed intact in De Kalb, Texas. The plane burst into flames on the ground, killing all seven passengers. The cause of the fire was faulty heater wiring.
Rick's Legacy lives on in his music and in his 4 children. The fact that the term "teen idol" was expressly coined for Rick, that Rock and Roll may have never received the acceptance that it did were it not for Ricky Nelson doing "I'm Walkin'" on national television and Rick's musical pioneering spirit helped give us today's sound are all part of his Legacy as well.
