Rock 'n' Roll Artists A-Z...The Ronettes

http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Studio/2469/

The sounds of the Manhattan-born sisters, (Estelle and Veronica) and their cousin (Nedra Talley),exploded out of tiny a.m speakers in the summer of 1963 with the classic "Be My Baby",and the momentum didnt stop for another 18 months."Baby I love you", "Best Part Of Breaking Up", "Do I Love You" and the Grammy winning "Walking In The Rain" followed that first Phil Spector-produced hit as the Ronettes became a staple of the Philles label and the Top 40. Go-Go boots, miniskirts, "tough/soft" street girls ... all these things come to mind when talking about what must be considered the ultimate girlgroup.

Veronica Bennett was the lead singer(of course),she possesed a unique vibrato that sent grown men and boys alike to their knees. her pattented whoa-whoa-ohs and oowee-babys are as strong as they ever were.

Ronnie was born in Spanish Harlem on Augest 10, 1943 as Veronica Yvette Bennett. Her father nicknamed her "Butchie". Her mother was black and her father was white, in her book "Be My Baby" she says at age 12 she had an identity crisis and didn`t know if she was black or white. Ronnie Spector was always encouraged to sing and perform by her family. When older, Ronnie, her sister Estelle and cousin Nedra went on to become Murray the K`s dancing girls and from there they recorded some singles for Colpix records. They ended up as go-go dancers at the Peppermint Lounge for Joey Dee and the Starlighters. Phil Spector eventually spotted the Ronettes and with a phone call from Estelle, and a phony excuse to Colpix they got out of thier contract and then signed with Phil Spector and the rest is history

Be My Baby

Da Doo Ron Ron is the first of three remarkable records, released in near succession, that defines the Spector recording style in its prime. They leave an indelible impression on listeners, who are pulled into the musical dramas by an irresistible hook or intro, bombasted with sound from many sources, but nevertheless allowed room for emotional response

Success was largely due to Spectors ability to control all elements of the final products .The next of the three big singles was the Crystals Then He Kissed Me, the record can only be described as sonic. Locomotive castanets and ooh-wah-wah background vocals buried in the mix give the record momentum. An unforgettable guitar lick opens the track and returns throughout, chasing the castanets

The third and perhaps most influential of the three records was Be My Baby by the Ronettes. The record begins with a simple but riviting drum intro, joined on the fourth beat by a chain of castanets, these are accentuated by a muted piano/guitar accompaniment playing the same six note figure The classic intro has been described as a glorious thunderclap of percussion and as militaristically precise. The chain of castanets, slapping like a cracking whip cannot fail to grab the listeners attention from the start.

The intro is one of the most famous in all rock and roll, has been copied by artists and producers alike. Be My Baby was the fastest selling record in the short history of Philles records, peaking at #2 in Sept. 1963. Many including Brian Wilson consider it the best pop record of all time. The Ronettes next release was Baby I Love You In late 63. A marvelous creation in its own right, its crashing intro and wall of sound are so thick the listener has to hear it more than once to discover all its components. It peaked at #24, Ronnies quivering whoa-oh-ohs rode the melenge of sound with panache and the background vocals included Cher and Darlene Love. A collection of hits was issued as the album "Todays Hits". Undoubtedly the best Philles album yet was the final release of 63. "The Phil Spector Christmas Lp"

phil spectors use of stereo equipment has spanned virtually his entire career when choices exist between mono and stereo versions, the stereo version is often assumed superior, but not neccessarily so,since its sound may vary significantly from the original hit version in mono. this is true of spectors work on the ronettes lp. Phil Spector used a three track system in a way that fixed forever his (and everyone elses) ability to produce stereo versions of his philles hits. By placing the entire rhythm section on one track (drums/pianos/bells /castanets/shakers and god knows what else),spector limited the degree to which stereo could be made. the wall of sound could not be rechanneled for stereo; it remains forever isolated on one channel with strings and background vocals on the opposite channel and the lead vocal split between the two. Any listener can clearly hear the downsizing of the wall in the stereo versions of the ronettes and the xmas lp.

One of the greatest tracks on the ronettes lp is walking in the rain. in mono, the bells, shakers and gentle percussion envelope the listener, and the startling real thunder (which earned the song a grammy) crashes all around. the listener feels surronded by the storm and drenched by the downpour. the stereo version sounds smaller, thunder echoes from only one speaker; the bells/rain issue from the other and despite ronnies vocal on both channels, listening to this version is like watching a rainstorm through a window, the stereo has taken something away.personally I enjoy the stereo version.

Wall of Sound

Phil spector recorded his bigest hits at goldstar studios, instead of having one guitarist,he would have five or six and three pianos, double drums, dozens of strings and a whole slew of background singers.then he would record everything back on top of itself to double the sound. then double that recording and so on until he was satisfied that the sound was thick enough. The wrecking crew consisted of a group of regular session players including hal blaine on drums, sonny bono on percussion, leon russell on keyboards, glen campbell on guitar billy strange on guitar, nino tempo on sax and many others. the background singers could be anyone who was there at the time.
