From Los Angeles, California, USA. Stu Cook, John McFee, Tim Goodman, David Jenkins, and Kurt Howell formed this group in mid-1983. Southern Pacific's rock & roll past constantly dogged the group's reputation. Keith Knudsen and John McFee were former members of The Doobie Brothers (McFee had also played alongside Huey Lewis in a band called Clover), original lead vocalist Tim Goodman had recorded a solo album, and Stu Cook performed in Creedence Clearwater Revival. Even when Goodman left the band, they replaced him with another ex-rocker, former Pablo Cruise vocalist David Jenkins. They did have one member with strong country roots: Kurt Howell played keyboards for Crystal Gayle.
Southern Pacific signed with Warner, and released a strong debut album in 1985, though the media continually questioned the band's commitment to country. The group plied a very danceable brand of country, and hit a high point with their 1988 album Zuma, which included their biggest single, "New Shade of Blue." Eventually, Southern Pacific left country music, intending to pursue a pop career.
