British band that included three major influential guitarists: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page. Originally called The Most Blueswailing Yardbirds. With the exception of Keith Relf who passed away in 1976, Jim and Chris were the only two members of the original Yardbirds who remained with the band throughout its existence. Having said that, we can begin the biography of the present day Yardbirds.
In 1992 the Yardbirds were inducted into America's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This transatlantic recognition helped convince Jim and Chris that the time was right for the Yardbirds to perform live again.

Says Chris: "There has been a real trend back towards live music - people have definitely wanted to go and experience the excitement of musicians performing on stage. The Yardbirds were always a blistering live band - and judging from our present-day audiences, we are getting the message to a real cross-section of people again. We have a real chemistry in the band, and it's great being able to work with musicians of the highest calibre - including Gypie Mayo, who follows in a tradition of brilliant guitar players."

In Britain, the past couple of years have seen acclaimed sellout performances. During this period, the Yardbirds have also toured internationally, with concert and festival dates in America, Australia, Europe and Scandinavia.

The Yardbirds were one of the important bands in the 1960s London blues / pop / rock scene.
Early repertoire consisted of blues covers by the likes of Howlin' Wolf, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley.
Numerous personnel changes mean there isn't a definitive Yardbirds line-up. However, Keith Relf (vocals), Chris Dreja (rhythm guitar, later bass), Jim McCarty (drums) and Paul Samwell-Smith (bass, until mid-66) formed the stable part of the band, initially with Top Topham on lead guitar.
Their first album, "Five Live Yardbirds" was recorded with Eric Clapton on lead guitar at London's Marquee Club.
Clapton left, not pleased with the pop direction of the band, just before the single "For Your Love" brought the Yardbirds fame both throughout the UK and internationally.
The second LP, known today as "Roger the Engineer" but originally as "The Yardbirds", featured Jeff Beck, the lead guitarist who was a member during their most successful period.
"Little Games", the third album, was not released in Britain, as popularity declined.
And the final LP was barely released at all, being a live set which pointed the way to Led Zeppelin, formed by Beck's replacement on lead, Jimmy Page. This album is currently only available on bootlegs.
A succession of not only lead guitarists, but also managers and producers, mean that their LP and CD discography is rather disjointed.
Since splitting in 1968, Topham, Clapton, Beck, Page, Relf and McCarty have enjoyed varying levels of recording success. Relf died in 1976 after being electrocuted at home. Samwell-Smith became a music industry producer (after some production experience with the Yardbirds), and Dreja a photographer.

They recorded "You're a Better Man than I" with 'Sun'-founder Sam Phillips in Memphis.
Jimmy Page worked on eponymous albums for the Kinks, the Rolling Stones, the Pretty Things and Them.
Page was asked to join after Clapton left - but instead recommended Beck. It was only after Samwell-Smith left that he eventually joined.
The Yardbirds met Lou Reed on a number of occasions whilst in New York.
David Bowie covered Yardbirds-original "Shapes of Things", plus "I Wish You Would" with a Yardbirds-style arrangement, on his Pinups album.
Jimmy Page wasn't the only member of Led Zeppelin to appear on Yardbirds recordings - John Paul Jones played on "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago", among others.
The band appeared in Michelangelo Antonioni's 1966 film Blow-Up. They played Stroll On in a scene set in a club, featuring Jeff Beck smashing his guitar.

The Yardbirds are currently working on both studio and live recordings.
