3G WCDMA Handset Links

A poster on another board advised that he saw see no evidence that anyone other than Qualcomm can make a working CDMA or W-CDMA chipset and he asked me to provide some links to substantiate that other companies have working CDMA chipsets destined for anyone's handsets.

These are the links and commentary I provided to honor that request:

NEC, Panasonic, Fujitsu, Single-Mode WCDMA

• On the single-mode side of things lets start with commercial NTT DoCoMo FOMA service. There are no Qualcomm chipsets in any one of these 5 handset models, 2 terminal models, and 1 modem card, so far as I know:

Nokia 6650 Dual-Mode 3GSM WCDMA

• On the dual mode side might as well start with the Nokia 6650 which was commercially released and demonstrated in both GPRS and WCDMA mode on September 26, 2001 at the Sonera event. Nokia 6650 product page here:

• Ray Le Maistre settling the dispute about whether the phone was demonstrated live in WCDMA mode:

• Press Release announcing type approval in both Europe (RandTTE) and Japan (TELEC) - Passed type approval tests mean that the shipments can now begin to operators. Operators across the world will now start receiving the Nokia 6650 terminals for their network optimization and interoperability testing, preceding the estimated commercial availability of the terminal in the first half of 2003.:

[Numerous articles are available on H3G in UK with GSM GPRS roaming on m02 planning to launch commercially with both NEC dual-modes and Motorolas this quarter following friendly user trials now in progress, but we'll have to watch to see if they really do commercially launch.]

Siemens U10 Dual-Mode 3GSM WCDMA

• Article about and photo of the Siemens U10. - Siemens has unveiled its first 3G handset, the U10 which supports both W-CDMA networks and in GSM/GPRS 900/1800 and 1900. Siemens mobile will distribute U10 3G handsets, a first result of the technical collaboration with Motorola, to selected operators to help build up UMTS networks and services. The U10 is a mobile multimedia powerhouse. It has an integrated camera which rotates 180° and captures video with sound and still images. With high speed Internet access via WAP 2.0 it allows data streaming at up to 384kbs and offers the download of additional applications based on Java Wireless Technology as well as connectivity to peripheral devices such as laptop computers through Bluetooth, USB or infrared. The U10 supports video streaming with file formats such as MPEG-4 and music files like MP3 and AAC (Advanced Audio Coding). It has an expandable 2MB worth of memory. The U10 will be available with selected operators in Europe for testing purposes from December 2002.

• Jørgen Sundgot, of InfoSync comes through with an article and pictures of the Siemens quad-band, dual-mode 3GSM WCDMA handset and as usual has a great high-res pic:

Jørgen says:

Just in time for Christmas, ... but the first batches will go to operators for testing and trial purposes, so don't think you're going to get your hands on one just yet.

Sony EricssonDual-Mode 3GSM WCDMA

• Ericsson PR for unreleased "working" test models. - Ericsson today announced the first live, dual mode WCDMA/GSM calls with seamless handover between the two modes. The demonstration, which was performed for Telia and Hi3G (Hutchison Whampoa), also included high data rate in live WCDMA/GSM networks. The small-sized Sony Ericsson test units used are based on a commercial platform developed by Ericsson Mobile Platforms. The Sony Ericsson test units used are designed for interoperability tests with different networks and as proof of concept for customers using the 3G platform from Ericsson. The mobile platform solution is capable of full WCDMA and GSM/GPRS dual mode, including handover. It also supports a complete set of 3G applications and thus enables the development of small attractive 3G handsets. Power consumption and battery capacity of the handsets used is equal to today's GSM phones.

I suppose it is possible that there is a Qualcomm MSM6200 inside those units but there have been several articles like the ones below that would indicate that TI will probably produce the SE designed chip:

• Samsung

From the Korea Times: Samsung Electronics is in the process of developing a dual-band, dual-mode chipset, a key component for third-generation (3G) mobile phones based on wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) technology. On Tuesday, KT ICOM chief executive Cho Young-chu said the company is highly likely to use Samsung's own dual-band, dual-mode (DBDM) chipset after the company launches the commercial operation of its 3G network next June. "We will use Qualcomm's DBDM chipset in a test-run of 3G service next April, but Samsung's chipset is also possible after the commercial service begins," Cho said in a press meeting. [We'll have to see about that one.]
