CHALLENGE 1-8 QUESTIONS and ANSWERS

CHALLENGE 1:
A soldier has been captured by the enemy. He has been so brave that they offer to let him choose how he wants to be killed. They tell him, "If you tell a lie, you will be shot, and if you tell the truth you will be hanged." He can make only one statement. He makes the statement and goes free. What did he say?

CHALLENGE 1 ANSWER:
He said, "I will be shot." If he were shot, it would be the truth, and if they hanged him it would be a lie. So they set him free.


CHALLENGE 2:

Three youngsters on our street went shopping for clothes in a very unusual clothing store. The owner charges $3 for a tie, $3 for a hat, and $5 for a shirt. How much would a jacket cost?

CHALLENGE 2 ANSWER:
$6. The storekeeper charges $1 per letter in the name of the item.


CHALLENGE 3:

A young explorer called his expedition chief in great excitement
to report that he had just found a golden coin marked 6 B.C.
The expedition chief fired him. Why?


CHALLENGE 3 ANSWER:
A coin was perhaps made before Christ, but it was impossible to know that he was to be born. Hence the BC mark was declared after he was put on earth.

CHALLENGE 4:

A man just finished painting his house and needs something more. At the hardware store the clerk shows him what he wants and says, "one is $1". "Fine," says the man, "I took 600, so here's $3." What had he bought?

CHALLENGE 5

I am a word of meanings three.
Three ways of spelling me there be.
The first is an odour, a smell if you will.
The second some money, but not in a bill.

CHALLENGE 5 ANSWER:

CHALLENGE 6:

A horse salesman went to a horse auction with a certain number of horses. To his first customer, he sold half his horses, plus half a horse. To his second, he sold half of what he had left, plus half a horse. To the last, he sold half of what he had left, plus half a horse. Each of his customers received whole horses, however, not half horses, and he had no horses left. How many horses did he start out with?

CHALLENGE 6 ANSWER:
SEVEN. The first man gets three-and-a-half, plus one-half, or four horses. The second man gets half of the three that are left, one-and-one half, plus one-half, making two. That leaves one, so the last man gets one-half and one-half. If you start from teh end and work backwards, it's easier.

CHALLENGE 7:

A man is stalking a bear that has attacked his camp. He reports later that naturally he went south. What color was the bear?

CHALLENGE 7 ANSWER:]
White. He was at the North Pole if he could only go south
and the bear was a polar bear


CHALLENGE 8:

Translate the following:

Even if you never had a word of Latin, you should be able to read and understand the following poem:

O sibili si emgo.
Fortibuses i naro.
O nobili demis trux
Vatis inem? Caus and dux.

CHALLENGE 8 ANSWER:
Oh, see Billy, see them go.
Forty buses in a row.
Oh, no, Billy, them is trucks.
What is in them? Cows and ducks.
