CHALLENGE 46-48 QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS:

CHALLENGE 46:
You can, if you want to waste a lot of time, count sheep by counting heads and legs and dividing by 5. However, could you figure out how many birds (two-legged) and how many mammals (four-legged) your local zoo had? You counted 78 legs and 35 heads. How many of each were there?

Thirty-One Birds and Four Mammals.

CHALLENGE 47:
The old lady who lived in a shoe was having some real trouble buying Christmas presents for her enormous family. Although she bought the least expensive stocking stuffers she could find, the bill was high. Of course, both a 15 percent sales tax and a 5 percent luxury tax were added to the original price. She paid a total of $100.00. What was the cost of the stuffers before taxes?

CHALLENGE 47 ANSWER:
$83.33 The taxes are 20 percent of the selling price.

CHALLENGE 48:
It was one of those silly guessing games for a prize. How many Christmas tree balls were in the big bowl in the department store? Surprisingly, there were only five guesses. Jim was five under, Susan was two under, Willy was the winner. Jack was one over, and Alice was six over. The numbers were: 26, 15, 18, 21, and 20. How many ornaments were in the bowl?

CHALLENGE 48 ANSWER:
Twenty.
