CHALLENGE 104 QUESTION AND ANSWER:


The brilliant but not entirely sensible inventor had discovered three separate ways to save fuel while driving. Each one saved approximately 30 percent on fuel consumption. "Aha,"said the brilliant inventor, "I will use only 10 percent of the fuel I now use and save a great deal of money." Unfortunately, it didn't work out that way. How much fuel did he save, assuming that all the savings were independent and cumulative?

ANSWER:

He saved 65.7 percent on fuel, using 34.3 percent of what he did before.
